DOGS % 72l
Traveling Companion
‘VITH spring coming, probably|:
you are planning some weekend |
trips of even getting ready for an|
early vacation, Where you go—and|
how you travel—may be governed|
to some extent by whether you are
taking your dog. X
Taking a dog on a trip is not
nearly the adventure it once was,
however. That's partly because
most dogs nowadays are used to
riding in autos, trains, and ships—
and partly because most owners
have discovered that reasonable
traveling accommodations for their
dogs can save both dog and owner
from inconvenience.
Most owners today know, for ex
ample, that dogs shouldn’t be made
to ride in the trunks of cars. There
fs real danger that carbon mon
oxide fumes, escaping from the
car's exhaust, will seep into the
trunk and asphyxiate the dog. If the
fumes don’t kill him, they certainly
may make him violentiy {il. The
odor of raw gas and burned gas
fumes, stronger in the trunk than
elsewhere in the car, will also tem
porarily destroy a dog's sense of
smell. For this reason alone, few
hunting dogs are transported in the
trunks of cars these days.
~ It's not particularly difficult to
prepare your dog to be a pleasant
traveling companion up front in
your car. The principal trouble to
avoid is carsickness. Don't give

This is the Army’s newest Tank, the Patton 48, described as the most
modern medium tank ever made for our troops. The new combat vehicle
has just been unveiled at the Chrysler Delaware Tank Plant where it
was built. Design of the tank was completed by Chrysler Corporation to
specifications of Army Ordnance. Extreme maneuverability of the Patton
48—its low silhouette—one piece cast armor hull and improved fire
power all combine to make the Patton 48 a formidable fighting machime.

your dog any food or water for sev
eral hours before starting on a trip.
If it is a long trip, feed him only
lightly on the road. When you have
an opportunity, let him out of the
car for a brief run.
If you will be making a relatively
long trip by train, the same feeding
suggestions apply. If the dog is
being shipped in a crate, be sure
the crate is big enough so that he
can move around in it, and strong
enough to hold him. Attach a sup
ply of canned dog food—and a can
opener and feeding instructions to
the crate, if the dog will be travel
ing alone. If you are riding the train
with him, you will be permitted to
go to the baggage car and feed him
yourself.
Before taking your dog so a for
eign country, check to see if you
will need a health certificate from
your veterinarian, or a certificate
attesting that the dog has been in
oculated against rabies. It may also
be helpful while traveling in the
U. 8. to have a rabies inoculation
certificate in your possession.
If you také your dog abroad, you'll
find that steamship lines provide
food and a kennel for him, This is
part of the service he gets in return
for his fare.
All this sounds like a lot of trou
ble? It isn't, really. And where can
you find & more amiable and enter
taining traveling companion?
