Three Little
i
Bears Won't
Change Hoime
BEDFORD, Ind., July 22—(AP).
Once upon a time there were
three bears named Brownie,
Maggie and Mollie and they lived
in a den in Wilson Park Zoo.
They still live there today, too.
Leaverson Park Zoo of Pales
tine, 111., bought the bears and
sent a crew of workmen and a
truck after them Monday.
The men tore out a section of
the wall, built a ramp into the
truck, and set several quarts of
honey in the vehicle. One bear
sniffed at the honey and dashed
back into the cage.
Spanking with boards and wav
ing a blowtorch only caused the
Lears to retreat into their winter
den behind and below the cage.
They ventured a step or two be
' vond the opening occasionally but
;refused to approach the truck.
The workmen decided to wait
for further efforts,
Pointing out that the truck now
is a temporary section of the cage
wall, Mayor Ivan H. Brinegar said,
“They can’t quit now. They've got
to get the bears in the truck.”
He didn’t say when.

Baxter’s Still
Atop League
Behind the four-hit pitching of
Francis Tarkington, Baxter
stretched their Little League lead,
dropped Chicopee into third place,
and won yesterday's game, 6-2,
It was Tarkington all the way,
as the righthander allowed Chico
pee only single runs in each of
two innings in racking up his
seventh consecutive victory with
out a loss. The league leading
turler did everything that could
be expected of him, as he scat
tered four hits, walked only three,
and struck out twelve.
The loss shoved Chicopee into
third place in the league stand
ings, one-half game behind Sport
ing Goods. Baxter eased two
games away from the second place
club with yesterdsy’s win.
Chicopee used tnree pitchers in
an attempt to stop the Baxter
drive. Melton started off, was
relieved in the fourth by Allen,
and Dickens came on to finish the
tilt in the sixth. (Baxter touched
the three hurlers for a total of
six hits and 11 walks, which
proved fatal for Chicopee.
The losers scored both of their
runs on long hits. Gates homered
with none on in the sixth, and
William Allen drove in the other
run with a triple..

If everybody was as interested
in politics the year round as
they've been for the past month,
conniving politicians and graft
ers would have something to
worry about. The trouble lis,
though, that only the politicians
are interested and working at
that job all the time and they
are not bothered by a few weeks
of public interest which becomes
a sort of picnic. @ NEA
