Perhaps Katy’s most memorable
experience will result from her
Joining Mrs. Nore and her daugh
ter in the Norwegian custom of
taking the cows up on the moun
tain for fresh grass during the
Summer for about six weeks. On
the mountain they will live in a
small cabin with no conveniences,
an hours’ climb from the nearest
road, and will milk the nine cows
by hand.
Katy, like all of Georgia’s In
ternational Farm Youth Exchange
dele;gates, was selected on the
basis of her record during her
4-H career. She was 1948 state and
national girls record winner and
gqneral excellence scholarship

gates, sent aboard for four months
in an effort to give them a better
understanding of farming and the
way of life in the countries visited
are: Harold Joiner, Laurens coun
ty, in Germany; Bob Jones, Union,
in Greece; Hansel Wilson, Bar
tow, in Turkey; and Carol Sir
mans, Berrien, in England.

Livestock receipts at the local
sale Wednesday afternoon totaled
233 cattle, 169 calves, and 182 hogs.
Cattle and calf receipts were
about the same as one week ago.
Trading was falrly active, and de
mand was fairly good for most
' classes on offer., Compared with
one week ago, cattle and calf‘
prices were steady to SI.OO lower,
spots $2.00 lower on some slaugh
ter cows. Hog prices were mostly
$2.00 to $2.50 higher.
Good and choice slaughter steers
and heifers sold from R 26.25 to
$30.00, while commercial offerings
brought $24.70 to $26.00. Utility
steers and heifers sold from $20.50
to $22.75, while canner and cutter
offerings ranged from $15.00 to
$19.30.

ves and vealers brought $27.40 to
$31.50, while utility and commer
cial offerings sold from $19.00 to
$26.75. Culls brought $15.25 to I
$19.00.
Utility slaughter cows brought|

$17.50. Canner cows sold from
$13.50 to $16.00.
Commercial slaughter bulls
brought $23.00 to $24.75, while
utility offering brought $19.-
00 to $22.00. Canner and cut

Common stocker steers and
heifers changed hands from $17.50
to $24.00, while inferior offerings
brought $14.90 to SIB.OO. Good and
choice stock calves brought $26.00
to as high as $35.00, while com
mon and medium offerings ranged ‘
from SIB.OO to $27.00. Inferior cal
ves sold from $15.00 to $18.50.

Athens Lodge No. 767, Loyal
Order of Moose, joing the many
other Moose lodges in the state in
honoring Governor Herman Tal
madge, who is a charter member
of Atlanta Lodge No. 65, with
a statewide membership drive
in his name, The local drive is in

A series of entertainments and
parties have been planned by the
local lodge, beginning with a stag
party Friday, August 1; admission
is to be one prospective new mem
ber. On Saturday, August 9, a free
supper and dancing has been ar
ranged for the members and new
prospects, their wives and sweet
'hearts.
The drive will be terminated-
August 17 with an initiation, pre
sided over by the championship
Atlanta Degree Staff, and Drill
team, followed by a barbecue for
the members, their wives and
sweethearts.
The goal for the local lodge is
75 new members during the drive
and some valuable prizes are on
display at the lodge, to be given
’during the drive.

Madison Schools
Open August 27
The opening date set for the
Madison County Schools is|
Wednesday, August 27. The pre- |
vious week will be . devoted to
pre-planning for all teachers,
A child entering the first grade
will be required to present a birth
certificate. Children under six
years of age desiring to enter
school may do so provided they
become six by November 20.
Plans are being processed for
submittal to the State Building
Authority for several new school
buildings and additions to present
ones in Madison County. Options
for .sites of proposed new build
ings have been secured and archi
tects are preparing plans and
blue-prints. This work will prog
ress as rapidly as plans are ap
proved and contracts authorized. I
