THE BANKER ATHENS, GEORGIA. Jl'LY 30, SS9 ETTERS OF INQUIRY. KVory Mail Brines Letters Inquiring. About the Possibilities of Athens. There is not a mail that comes now, hut brings long letters from manufacto ries and capitalists all over the United States inquiring about Athens and her future. The fact has gone abroad over the land that Athens is to become a great city, and manufacturers every where are keeping their eyes on the city. Every membei; of the Land Com pany receive daily these letters, and make a point to answer them full}' and accurately. The post master informs us that he is bothered to death almost by the overwhelming numbef’-of letter^ that come to him daily, asking about the population, and the principle in dustries of Athens. All this means much more than'mere inquiry. If the city .council comply with the petition of the committee in behalf of small industries for Athens, and remove the tax on them, there will be scores of nianufactories of various kinds planted in Athens at once. The . city should contemplate this in its seri ous and most useful, aspect; The cri sis has come to Athens and the city council can easily surmount it if they will. Now city fathers let us hear from you. THE SNAKE STORY. Affords the JBanner a Theme for a Serial Story* Scene fourth of the snake charmer’s story—for it is a continued story—finds us in the halls of a justice court,* where -fudge Evans ekes out blind justice for man’s Inhumanity toman, and cruelty to animals. It is a strange proceeding sure, this case of the snake charmer from Texas, for it is a medley of ro mance and crime, of man’s inhumanity, and woman’s cruel fickleness. But tire acting begins. , Judge Evans lays down the law 'which Henry Thomas, the snake charmer, is charged with having vio lated. Henry pleads innocent, and through his attorney endeavors to prove his innocence. The scene is affecting in the extreme. There stands the queer enough char mer of evil spirits, before a tribunal. At his feet is coilod the ill omened ser pent that oft is charmed by the magic spell of its owner, and which itself eighteen hundred years ago and more did charm the human race to sin and pain. It is the same old story: A man, a woman, and a serpent. The case went on and Henry failing tdprove that he had not used his fatal charm in abducting Diana away from home and mother, was sent back to his gloomy cell in the county jail. His attorney claimed his fee, which Henry was willing but unable to pay. and the young counsellor was forced to levy on the rattlesnake, his only prop erty to secure the pay for his labors. Reluct;;oly and with the spirit of a martyr Henry gave up his companion, but asked that it might be allowed to stay With him in jail to give him solace in liis lonliness. The sheriff* objected, and the accursed snake was turned loose to go as its own evil master in search of. what it may devour. But this is not all. The young attorney,we learn, will file suit against the authorities for so ruthlessly refusing shelter to the snake, which was his own levied property, and if this is so the story is not yet ended. CAN HE KNOCK OUT JOHN L Governor Lowry Busy to Bring the Fight ers to Justice. * Four Lives for a Watch. Jackson, Miss., 20.—Gov. Lowry is still Wsy with the business left on his hanjls by Sullivan and Kilrain. and his frequent communications with the tel egraph office indicate that he is in eon- telegraphic correspondence on the sub ject. He is quite reticent as to the de tails of. what he is doing, but avows in general terms liis determination to bring Sullivan and Kilrain and their, gang to this State and puuish them .ex haust the law, or ruu them off American soil. -He has received scores of news papers with marked articles in refer ence to him in this matter, and hun dreds of letters from all ‘ parts of the Union, nearly all approving his efforts to bring back the pugilists. He has also received several letters of a very scurrilous nature, abusing him and call ing him Imrsh names. One from Chi cago says that unless he ceases his pur suit that lie will be killed, aud one from Boston says lie is to die, aud that next Sunday will he his last on earth. An other from Brooklyn tells him he is making a bigger fool of himself over a small matter than a New England cler gyman would he expected to do. Detective Norris, now iu New York was here for two days immediately af ter the fight and was in the Governor’s office most of the time, and as it was known that he accompanied Kilrain’s party through Mississippi before the battle, the idea prevailed here on the outside that lie was here in the interest of Kilrain and eudeavoriug to ff nd out the Governor’s intentions, but as it liaii- pens the Governor intrusted him with requisitions, he must have satisfied him Unit Iris intentions were to capture the pugilists and secure the reward. Attorney-General Miller to-day pre pared to be filed in the Lauderdale County Circuit Court an information in the name of the District-Attorney against the Northeastern Railroad Com pany, setting forth in an informal man ner the grievance of the State against said corporation in its active participa tion in the Sullivan-Kilrain mill and prays for judgment of forfeiture and ouster. These proceedings “are insti tuted after a two days’ consultation l»e- fcween the Governor ami At torney-General and District-Attorney Neville. OF QUARTER 0F.MILI0N WHIPPED BY 20 WOMEN. With Blacksuakes and Switches They Punish a Wife Beater. A NEGRO LYNCHED. Swift Retri- Attenipted Assault and lmtion. Covixgtox, Ga., July 22.—Last night about dark a negro, Dun Malone, aged 22, attempted to assault a respectable \vhite woman, Mrs. Rachael Skinner, living six miles from Covington. Her screams brought assistance, hut the negro escaped. The negro was captured and identi fied, and confessed liis guilt. This morning as he was being brought to town he was taken from the officer by sixty masked men and hung. THE TRIAL IS ON. Evaxstowx,, IVyo., July 22.—John Lewis, keeper of a saloon and gambling 'house at Fassil, frightfully maltreated his delicate wife yesterday. She received an unusually severe cas tigation last night, being de tected in teaching her little boy a prayer. Late last night the women of Fassil to the number of twenty visited Lewis’ place, armed with black snakes, buggy whips; and willow switches. They overpowered tlie fellow and gave him a good thrashing, leaving stripes all over his body and cutting liis face and head badly. Lewis resisted with all his strength and cursed loudly. Becoming personal in his abuse, some men present essayed to quiet him, threatening the. use of a rope. A few of Lewis’ friends came to his rescue. Revolvers were drawn and the barking of six-shooters was lqiul and lively. The room was full of smoke and the lights were extinguished. When order was restored, among the men to crawl out frojn under the bil liard tables was one with a shattered shoulder and another with a wounded arm. A bullet passed through the high coiffure of one of the women- The fright and shock caused the women’s prostration, aiid her condition is now critical. TlieWork of Getting a Jury for Cof- ^ fee.. And the Sensation it is ilig. Special to The Banner. Jackson, Tenn., July 22.—Notwith standing the great Howard libel trial has been in progress here the last six weeks, the interest in the case is una bated. It is gathering tremendous crowds from all parts of West Tennes- ■ee and Mississippi every day to hear the speaking. The attorneys on both sides have been arguing the case for the past five days. The counsels for the defense have in an eloquent and admifublp manner showed by their witnesses that the plaintiff'is Frederick Ilowlett, aud not Howard, as he claims it is. This suit is in many .respects the greatest and most sensational that ever occurred in the United States. The amount of testimony brought before the jury has been immense^ Depositions were taken in South Carolina, Georgia, New York, Illinois, the District of Co lumbia and various points in Tennessee besides a great mass from India, . En gland, Italy and France. A great many local witnesses have been placed on the stand.
