"'■- ;>*£■ Jgpsp a*-v THE BANNER, ATHENS, GEORGIA, SEPTEMBER 17, iSS*. A SOLID PHALANX- THE MERCHANTS ARE UNITED THE ALLIANCE FAIR. FOR Nothing Remains But Fop the Alliance to Take Hold—The Fair Can be the Greatest Ever Held in Athens —Let the Work Proceed, On with the dance. So say the merchants of Athens to the farmers and their fair. Every merchant and every business man in Athens is heartily in sympa thy with the Alliancemen in the move of holding a fair this fall, and are enthused at the idea of Athens having the first and only Alliance Fair over known. A Banner reporter yesterday met Capt. C. G. Talmadge and asked how he thought the idea would take with the merchants. “ I can only answer for the firm of Talmadge Bros.,” said he,“and can say that we will surely be heard from at the proper time and in the proper manner. We tender our heartiest co-ope ration to the Alliance, and will take an .unusual interest in the Fair, because it is their’s. We like the idea of ah Alli ance Fair, and will encourage it in every way possible. We will be repre sented with the finest exhibit we ever gave at the Fair Grounds, for we are better able to do it this fall.” The Banner reporter was satisfied that the Alliancemen would meet strong friends in the Talmadge Bros., and with many such men as these on their side the Fair would be pushed through to a grand success. While on- the streets we met Mr. Moses Myers, who has never yet failed to aid in any undertaking that was cal culated to further the interests of Ath ens and surrounding country. “What say you of the Alliance Fair?’ asked the reporter. “A good thing, sir,” he replied, and one that demands the co-operation of every business man in Athens. I am in for it’s success as much as any mer chant in the city. I have never yet failed to give an exhibit at the fair, nor to help the association as much as any one,and I am more interested than ever, now that the farmers have taken the matter in hand. I.et the work proceed, and you may find me ready for the racket at any time.” Mr. J. S. King, who is acknowledged to be one of the most successful busi ness men in Northeast Georgia, as well as one of the most public spirited citi zens of Athens, was next met by the reporter. “The Banner lias hit upon the greatest idea yet,” said Mr. King, with out waiting for a question from the re porter. “The Alliance Fair is the very thing for Athens this fall, and it is bound to be a great success in every respect. It places the fair in the hands of the farmers, and there is the place for it. “The farmers can make a great thing of it, and the Alliance will rue the day it fails to take hold of the matter and earry the plans out—yes, you can put J. S. King & Co. down heartily in fa vor of the Farmers’ Fair.” Now, we take it that the assurances from these merchants are an indication of how the merchants and business men of Athens stand on the question of the Alliance Fair. They are representa- tive business men of the city. All of the merchants of Athens have never been known to be found wanting in anything which might redown to the interest of their city, and from what we have ascertained by the above interviews,we are encouraged in the belief that they stand in one solid phalanx, ready to strike with the Alii-, ance}» their efforts to hold a great Fair this fall. We $rp more plated than ever at the prospects of the Fair, ap4 feel doubly assured that it will be the gramlesf dis play ever given here. -The Alliance has C” l y to take bold and they will have a clear way to the greatest achjeyeinpnt of its kind CYCr “Witnessed in Northeast Georgia. It behooves them to hold the Fair. It will advance their interests more and give them more influence than'any thing they could do. They could make it a great re-union and study the interests of their order by having the different displays and the multitudes of Alliance men who will visit here. They can make money on the Fair, which can be spent in a way to establish the organi zation more substantially. In fact the profit to the Alliance of such a Fair can not be over estimated. Now, let them take up the ball that bas been started, and let the Alliance add another proof that it is a power in the land* Blair Says It's all Bight. Mr. S. O. The Augusta and Chattanooga to be Built Beyond Doubt—What the President Says—The G„ C. & N. Pro gressing Rapidly. The Augusta and Chattanooga rail road is no longer a myth. It is not re garded so by tiie President of the road, nor by the people of either Chattaiu o- gaov Augusta. A Banner reporter in conversation with Col. W. H. Moore, of the Augusta Evening News learne 1, that the road has never been given up by the Augus ta people and that the quietude about its .being built was not due to a lack of interest in that city. lie said that the road was regarded a certainty by the men of Augusta who were in a position to know its situation. That the road will be built is further shown by the follow ing news note clipped from the Chatta nooga Times: Mr. W. E. Baskette, president of the Augusta and Chattanooga railroad, was found at the Third National bank. IIis first words were: “The road will be built.” In subsequent conversation he said: “The survey and estimates of construction have been made. The cost is, to build and equip, $15,000 per mile. The lenght of the road is 250 miles. It has three important connections. At Gainesville it connects with the Rich mond and Danville road; at Athens with the Macon and Coving road. It also connects with the Roanoke and Sea Coast road, placing Chattanooga fifty miles nearer the sea coast than at pres ent. This road, when ruMiiilg, will place Chattanooga on the same basis as to freights as Cincinnati under the com merce law. DID YOU KNOW IT? Did you know catarrh is a blood disease? Well it almost invariably is, and frequently is a symptom of inherited blood poison. The tendency to catarrl may lay dormant in the system half a man’s lifetime and then suddenly become active and the disease at once severe and troublesome. N. C. Edwards, Lampassas Springs, Texas writes: “For over four years I have been a great sufferer from a terrible form of Nasal Catarrh. I was greatly annoyed with aconstant roaring in my bead and my hearing became very much impaired. The discharge from my nose was profuse and very offensive, and my general health CATARRH impaired. I tried most all prominent physicians, but they did not cure me, and I used various advertised preparations without benefit I then sent to the drug store of T. E. Smith & Bro, and purchased B. B.
