the Paste Board Abomination.
A reporter of the Banner while rest
ing from bis labors on the door step of
i prominent harness maker in our citv
was soon surrounded by several who i*n
their younger days were considered
adepts in the management of the paste
board abomination.
Said one who is now a bright light in
the church:
“I was playing draw poker and fixed
iip the cards to give my opponent a
queen full while I would hold four
fives.
lhe draw came, and my opponent
drew three cards to a queen and a nine,
thus givihg nim four queens, while I”
said the gentleman who sits over in the
Amen corner “drew four cards to a five
and got three more fives. Thinking
my opponent had a queen full and me
with four fives. I went for him,and we
never quit betting until a show was
called fo r on account of no more money
. I laid my four fives,’ ’ said the Chris
tian gentleman, “while my opponent
covered them with four queen®, beating
me out of all the money I had except
twenty-five dollars.
This was an awful mistake in fixing
up the hand, and the only way I had to
get even was to play him three-up, at
twenty-dollars a game, and f beat him
seventeen straights, and redeemed my
fallen fortune on the poker game. This
was a big piece of luck. But those
days are over, and now 1 would not
play a game if I knew I could win a
million.”
This proposition was consid
ered doubtful for a few mo
ments by the reporter, as a
chance to win a million is very rare,
and would be grabbed by anyone.
Another old gentleman who fs now
in the sear and yellow leaf, ami who
has seen the ups and downs of city- life,
informed the reporter that he had
bucked against the tiger in more than
one occasion, and had piled up his chips
to the limit every time. “I was once
playing against the famous Bill Moon,’
said this old gentleman who now sits
in the amen corner of the church, and
was playing for big stakes. “In the
middle of the deal I asked Bill what he
would pay if I called the next time.
Bill quickly remarked: I will pay you
$100 for one. I called it with five chips
five sixes.aml it came just as I called it,
and I pocketed a good round sum cn
the call. I have piled them up in my
days very lively, but this is all in the
past. I have quit the business.and am
now working to make a living without
it.”
There were several others of minor
importance who gave their experience,
and the general opinion is that those
ays of gambling are in the past.

Has Been Signed by the Governor—It is

asked the Banner lately. The bill has

New Year.
The Israelites of our city w ill observe
e new year holiday to-day, and ser-
ces will be held at the Synagogue at
half past ten o’clock this morning. All
are invited to attend.
The ball is rolling on.
Another day glides by, and brings
the Stock and Poultry show within a
nearer range.
The directors of the Fair are count
ing the days with eagerness until the
show Is opened, and as each day rolls
by it strips the distance of its fantasies
and the greatest Fair that ever was held
on the Athens grounds looms up in
wonderful proportions.
New features are constantly added
and the directors have a ready eye for
every attraction that could possibly
add to the enjoyment or profit of the
visitors to our Fair. Several new ad
ditions to the already attractive pro
gram were made yesterday, and the
premium list is beginning to swell with
the largest list of exhibits and
amusements imaginable.
The Fair will be kept alive by the
stirring notes of two excellent band®,
and tlie music will be among the ii:0-t
delightful features of the show. One
splendid brass band will furnish its
soul-stirring notes . in front of the
grand stand, as the flying racers
speed round the level track, while, a
superb orchestra of stringed instru
ments will give its sweetest strains to
the promenaders in the ladies’ depart
ment. This department will be bv far
the most beautiful and splendid array
of loveliness ever seen in Athens. It
will be one vast hall of varied exhibits
ef woman’s handiwork and will he
decorated with flowers and bunting on
every side. Promenading and dancing
will be freely indulged iu by tlie young
folks and delightful conversation will
‘keep alive the scene in noise and grace
ful confusion. The ladies who have
charge of this department will spare
no efforts to make it the best of the
Fair and that it will be among the most
enjoyaqle attractions of the Fair can
not be doubted,
A Banner reporter yesterday in con
versation with a prominent member of
the Board of Directors learned that ilie
privileges of the Fair were in great de
mand and that they were being sold
rftpidiy at handsome prices. This only
goes to show the great favor with which
exhibitors everywhere regard the F
and also indicates the advantages and
ea«e of getting up a most successful
show by tlie directors. There will be no
lack of exhibitors either in the way
amusements or of displays of any "Other
kind.
The railroads are already making
most satisfactory rates for visitors who
desire to visit Athens during the Fair,
and there will be the best opportunity
offered to the farmers in this way to
have the greatest muster of Alliance-
men ever assembled in the South. This
part of the show will be no less instruc
tive than interesting and the honest til
lers of Georgia’s fertile soil will meet in
one great school, as it were, to consult
with one another over the great ques
tions that confront them—to teach and
be taught the proper course to work
out the success of their vocation and
the salvation of our common country.
What a reunion that will be! It is a
proper oecasiod for rejoicing, and for a
study of the responsibility now resting
on the people of the South, and es
pecially the fanning class, for attain
ing that highest end of political econ
omy which the great questions of the
present day demand.
In fact the coming fair will be an oc
casion of tlie greatest benefit as well as
of merriment and fun to every class of
people that will assemble on tlie
grounds. Prominent statesmen from
every section will address the people
every day. Mr H. W. Grady, of At-
ta, has consented to open the Fair, and
his accustomed eloquence and match
less oratory will be a fit and proper
send off to the great Fair. Gov. Gor
don will also be invited to address the
people, as well as Livingston and other
prominent men.
There was never a greater occasion of
unalloyed mirth, merriment and jolity
offered the people of this section of the
State than is promised in the premium
lists and programs of the coming Fair,
which are now being issued from the
Banner job office. These premium
lists will be sent broadcast all over the
State.
The Fair is being worked' up thor
oughly by every means, and already
the universal response from every dis
Srict, from Carolinajto Alabama comes
back with one accord: “We will be
there;” and when the Fair gates are
thrown open on the morning of No
vember 15th, thousands will stand
ready to enter in the revelry within.

Value of Advertisements,
“Do I believe in advertising;” said a
prominent lawyer, a day or two ago.
“Well, rather; and in the hidden adver
tisement more than in any other. I re
member, one day, reading a very inter
esting story, that ended in what l took
to be a puff for Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant
Purgative Pellets. I threw down the
paper in a rage. Not a week after that
[ needed some medicine of that kind, and
went and bought those same little pills.”
“DidI find them good?” “Why, yes,
rlie best thing of the kind I ever saw,but
that has nothing to do with the first
question, and I only mention the joke
on myself to show that advertising does
pay.
