Been, for the second time in its history,
totally destroyed by fire. At 2:15 o'clock
Sunday morning a policeman discovered
flames issuing from the small windows
over the main entrance, and, rushing to
fha nearest signal-box, sent in an alarm.
THE TABERXAOT.E. BROOKLYN.
The firemen found the fire had assumed
large proportions, and additional alarms
-calling all available apparatus were at
once sent in. It become evident that
the edifice was doomed to destruction,
It burned like a tinder-box, and the fire
men, despairing of saving it, directed
- fheir efforts to the adjoining property.
Talm*;« Watched It Burn.
A number of dwellings on each side
of the chnroh were destroyed, many oi
the inmates escaping in their night
clothes. Fortunately there was no loss
of life or limb. While the fireman and
-police worked for the salvation of prop
erty and persons, the doomed church
building was being rapidly consumed,
end in on hour's time only tottering
walls remained. Dr. Talmage was on
the scene soon after the first alarm, and
did not leave nutil he had seen the edi
fice which had been his -ride laid in
ashes. Then he returnee, sorrowfully
home. All day crowds visited the spot
and gazed upon the ruins. Nearly all
the members of the Tabernacle congre-
S tion received their first intimation oi
e file upon rounding the adjacent cor
ners and being confronted by the black
ened walls and smoldering ruins.
Ko Services Held.
No church services were held Sunday,
but a notice upon a tree at tfu
corner of Third and Schermevhorn
streets announced Sunday school

Christian association, where about six
hundred teachers and scholars assembled
In the afternoon. Superintendent B. L.
Eels told them that the present was no
-time to cry or mourn. A calamity had
befallen the ohurch, and it was the duty
of all to work together until a new home
was built.
Origin Unknown.
The origin of the fire is unknown.
The sexton denies the rumor that fires
had been lighted Saturdav in the fur
naces. and thus explodes the defective
flue theory. Edison s men were in .the
building until 5:30 p. m. Saturdav ar

The Lnn.
The loss on the church building* in
cluding the organ, which was one of the
finest in the country, is $150,000. It is
