An Unfortunate Accident. Professor T. M. Means, formerly of Atlanta, met with a serious accident at Elko, Ga., on Saturday last, llis coat sleeve was caught in a gin and his left arm was pulled in and cut entirely off. Sr. Louis, Mo., October 22.—Early this morning the .'-'outhern Mills Bag- gin" company, located in the cents al part of this citv, was totally destroyed by fire. Loss,'175,000; partially instill ed. A\ e find the comity- treasurer’s books correct aud neatly kept. He has prop er vouchers for all moneys paid out and they cheek properly w irh his hooks. The amount of money on hand, $4,582.- 23 corresponds with amount to his credit at tlie National Bank of Athens. Full statement herewith attached. : PUBLIC PROPERTY. We have examined the Court House, Jail, Residence of the jailor and other houses connected therewith, and find fitem,all in excellent condition. We und ttie stalls erected for horses in court.house yard neatly built and cou rier Thom a great convenience. We commend the ordinary for having them erected. ORDINARY. Wc find the Ordinary’s hooks kept in a correct and most excellent manner. He has the bonds of all the county offi cers on file. We investigated each bond a.id deem the securities sufficient. .juarictis or Tnk peace and notaries PUBLIC. We find their books neatly kept, but in some instances the judgements ren dered by said officers are pot signed. Their items of costs seem to be correct. We suggest that the said justices be more accurate in showing on their dockets the final disposition ofcriu inal cases, as to whether the defendants were discharged or bound over to a higher tribunal. Also in docketing and filing civil cases the dockets do not show-the date of filing or of rendering judgement. ROADS AND BRIDGES. We find the roads and bridges in the county generally in good condition. CLERK SUPERIOR COURT. The clerk’s books are most neatly aud properly arranged, and we further find that he has added to his collection a general index book that we think will prove a great convenience to those seek ing information in his office. PAUPER FARM. The Farm is in good condition, and has been rented for the coming year on about same terms as this year. There are 9 paupers, 5 white and 4 colored. There are 9 convicts; all colored. We recommend that the committee appointed by a previous grand jury, iu As Itedden T. Pittard’s time expires in November, and he declines to serve again us Notary Public of 220tli Dist., we recommend the appointment of Thomas II. Brown of same districts We recommend that Justices of Peace be allowed $1.25 for taking down or eausing to be taken down, an abstract ee in each criminal case tried by them, that same be paid by a warrant from the Ordinary or the Treasurer, whieh shall be issued on the certificate of the Justice that such work has been rendered. We recommend that our Representa tive Hon. Henry C. Tuck take imme diate steps to withdraw or cause to be withdrawn and to effectually- kill the hill known as the Solicitor’s Insolvent Costs Bill, before the Legislature of Georgia. We recommend that the attention of the city counci : of Athens be called to the condition of the bridge on Oconee street over C. & M. Railroad. That said bridge he so changed as to make ascent anil decent easier to tlie travel ing public. We recommend the publication of these presentments in the Banner and Chronicle and that the amount of $20 he paid to each of said papers for pub lishing the same. To his Hon. Judge N. L. Kills Him on the Spot. Wheeling, October 22 About 6 o’clock this evening Charles Platt,aged fifteen, was deliberately mur dered by James Mullarky, a boy about two years older. Platt and a companion named games Vernon had been out in the country during the day after wal nuts. On their return they met Mullarky who had a rifle. He asked to he allow ed to ride, and, this being refused, he endeavored to steal some of the nuts. For this Platt struck him lighty with his whip.
