They also elect state senator, register and county clerk. New York, Nov. 7.—Returns from New Jersey come in slowly. Enough is in, however, to make it certain that Abbett is elected by an overwhelming majority, and that the Democrats have retained control of the assembly. Boyer’s plurality, taken from estimates from every county in the state is 62,255, Philadelphia, Nov. 7.—Returns from twenty-seven counties, includ ing Philadelphia, show a net Re- 1 publican gain of about 25,000 over 1887, when the Republican plurality was «5,245. Boyer’s plurality will certainly exceed 60,000. Philadelphia city gives Boyer 87,700 majority. Graham, Republican, for district attorney, has 42,544 majority over Lewis, Democrat. Returns from 57 of the 67 counties of the state, including Philadelphia and 1 Allegheny counties, give Boyer, Repub lican, for state treasurer, 62,115 plurality over Bigler, Democrat. Following are the estimated pluralities: Cameron county gives 100 for Boyer. Monroe, 1,050 for Bigler. Blair, 1,350 for Boyer. Juniata, 50 for Boyer. A Republican gain of 80. Snyder, 500 for Boyer. Annapolis, Md., Nov. 7.—A comptrol ler, members of the legislature and county officers were voted for in this state. The vote was very heavy. Indi cations received indicate Baughman’s Democratic majority ior comptroller will be 10,000, of which he receives 6,000 in Baltimore city. The legislature, as indicated by the’ returns, will be largely Democratic. Davidson. Democrat, for mayor of Baltimore, is elected by probably 3,500 plurality. Cleveland’s plurality in 1838 was 5,045. llie Republicans gain half a dozen legislators, but the Democrats will have both houses by and immense majority. I’astime at the Polls In Baltimore. Baltimore, Nov. 7.—Tho election in Baltimore wai comparatively quiet. One man was killed in the Fifteenth ward. Jno. Driscoll, a Democratic ticket holder, knocked down a fusion ticket holder named Apple, and kicked him to death. The quarrel' was not political, but the result of animosity between the two men on other grounds. Twelve wards complete give David son, Democrat for mayor, 2,761 ma jority. The same wards gave Cleveland 24,371 majority. An Election Riot. Frederick, Md., Nov. 7.—An elec tion riot occurred at the jjolling place in \Voodsboro district, this county, yester day afternoon. A county constable was shot, the judges driven from the room and the ballot box taken. Oppos ing factions arrayed themselves on each side of the road and fired on each oiher. Tlie sheriff and a posse have gone to the scene of the trouble. Tammany elects 14 assemblymen out of 24, and 5 out of 7 senators. Amos J. Cummings, Democrat, for congress in the Ninth district received 15,518, against 24 for John L. Thomas, Prohibition. Silver Dollar Smith Defeated. New York, Nov. 7.—In the Eighth assembly district, P. Wissig (Tammany and County Democracy) defeated Silver Dollar Smith by a majority of 147. MASSACHUSETTS. The Australian Ballot a Pronounced Suc cess—The Republican Majority. Boston, Nov. 7.—The elections in this state were for state officers and the leg islature. The Aus|falian ballot system was used for the first time. The day’s experience seemed to prove beyond doubt the success of the Aus tralian system of voting, and testimony from all sections of the state is almost unanimous in its praise. Bailey and Second Engineer William Ludlow, who were terribly scalded and bruised by the ex plosion of the boiler of tho fishing j steamer S. S. Brown off Cape May, are i reported here as being dead. * This maxes three deaths, William Locasta, the fireman, having been killed at once. The three deck hands, also burned at the same time, are in the Marine hos pital at Lewes. A Westinghouse Victory. Pittsburg, Nov. 7.—The United States supreme court decided an important arc light patent suit brought six years ago by the Brush Electric Light company against the United States company, a Westinghouse interest. The Brush com pany had been defeated in the lower courts and their decision is sustained. As the Brush company is now owned by I the Thomson-Houston company this means a defeat of the latter by the i Westinghouse company. Grabbed Her Hand satchel. Tho Majority Against Mahone Tfoji Than 25,000. Richmond, Va., Nov. 7.—Richmond gives McKinney and balance of Demo cratic ticket 5,472 majority, twice as large as ever given before. The returns from other parts of the state indicate a Democratic majority of not less than 25,000. The Republicans concede it by 15,000. Up to this hour the Democrats have gained eight members of legisla ture. The estimate is that the Demo crats will have a two-thirds majority in each house. In Henrico county, which heretofore has been Republican, Davis, Democrat is conceded elected to legisla ture by Republicans. jJirge Democratic gains in black belt, Halifax county heretofore Republican, gives 1,500 Democratic majority. l — Campbell county gives !Hi0 majority for McKinney. Voting, proceeded with dis patch and voters enjoyed a freedom from importunities of ballot distributors that they have never known before. Eighty towns and 268 precincts of Boston give Brackett 33,070, Russell 33,297, Blackmer 1,634. This indicates the election of Brackett and the entire Republican state ticket by a substantial majority; Russell lias made large gains ; in the towns, but has lost heavily in,; Boston. Eighty-five precincts in Boston give ! Russell 27.908, Brackett 22,810. Only one precinct is now lacking. This shows a decrease in the Democratic plurality over 1887 of about 200, and a decrease in Russell’s plurality over last year of about 3,800. Arlington,Lieutenant Governor Brack- • ett’s town, gives Brackett 473, Russell 280, Blackmer 18. In 1887 it gave Ames 432, Lovering 281. Later—It looks as if the Democrats had carried the state by cape. A Schooner Wrecked. Detroit, Nov. 7.—A special to the News from Cheboygan, Mich., says: The schooner Palms, with her cargo, is a total loss. She jumped Grey’s Reef during t’e recent blow and sank. Her cross trees are visible above the water. Her crew are here. This may be the wreck Captain McCarty reported at St. Ignace. Where Is Maj. Burke? Washington, Nov. 7.—Nothing has developed at the state department re specting the case of ex-State Treasurer Burke, of Louisiana, although one oi the officials said lie had heard a report that Burke was on his way to Hon duras. Columbus,-O., Nov. 7.—In this state the elections were for governor, lieuten ant governor, judge of the supreme court, state treasurer, state school com missioner, attorney general, member of the state board of public works and clerk of tho supreme court.
