The agricultural classes of these United States have been hitherto seeking through others to accomplish that which they should have done. The greater number have been toil ing from year to year like dumb cat tle," driven, guided and directed by the Master’s hand, never thinking about or caring to make any inquiry as to the direction given to the fruits of their arduous labors. The re mainder, while they have been ena bled to see measure after measure adopted to further oppress them > have been standing by in silent helplessness, never thinking that the power lay within their grasp to right their many wrongs. They have been looking to others, parties and politicians to effect the necessary industrial reform,* instead of using the power in their own hands to make the needed reform changes. These changes can be brought about by united effort. United ef fort is the legitimate offspring of thorough acquaintance with certain industrial questions. The Alliance proposes to educate its members so that they can be properly prepared to accomplish this much needed woik. Inferior minds cannot act the part of superior minds. Un thinking people must become’tlnnk- ers before they can intelligently act on issues thatjelale to their best interests. Ignorant people will always labor under many fold disadvantages and there will be necessarily great ine qualities of rights where a few well posted men act as rulers and directors of an ignorant, submissive mass. The intelligence necessary to keep abreast of the times twenty-five years ago is not adequate to fulfill -the duties of true and perfect citi zenship of tosday. That which will do to-day will not be sufficient in the years to come. The toiling millions on the farms ofthi8 country must recognize these facts as being unmistakably true and make up their minds to steadily increase in, intelligence on all industrial - questions, and by their united and .co-operative efforts give guidance and direction to this grand government in their interest and in the interest of all the people, or fall out of line and allow it to '"*ou given over into the hands oy a few power and money, lovers to ran it to their own benefit''"" The reason tfae government has not been taking any interest in the producing classes is because the producing classes have not taken the requisite.amount of- interest in the government. If the republic is run by the whole people, the whole people will be benefited If one or two classes take charge of it, it will be manipulated in their interest. The recent democratic gains in some of the republican states North are the outcome of Alliance teaching on the subject of Tariff Reform, many Alliance republicans voting for principal and not for democracy, only-in so far as the democratic can didates were committed to the prin - ciple of tariff reform. The Alliance proposes to teach its members to yote for principle atd not for men or party. * Geo. T. Murrell. Skin entirely gone.
