So the Colored Ma'e Students Became
Jealous and Hazed Him.
Atlanta, Ga., Jan. G.—[Special.]—
Clarke University, the leading colored
seat of learning in Georgia, is torn up
by a question of social equality. A
young white man a grandson of the
matron of the girls’ dormitory, is the
cause of the trouble which culminated
in a hazing several nights ago, and sub
sequently four arrests. B. J. Under
hill, the matron’s grandson, is nine
teen years of age, and for the benefit of
his health he has beet? spending the
winter here. He has baen occupying
quarters in the girls’ dormitory, and as
he is good-looking the colored male
students did not take kindly to him.
During the past two months, caucuses
have been held by the male students in
which Underhill and the girls’ dormi
tory were tho themes of discussion.
Delegation after delegation called upon
President Hickman and requested the
rcftiovul of the white bev from the dor
mitory Dr. Hickman lias steadily re
fused, saying Underhill was suffering
from consumption.
The denouncement occurred on
Christmas night when the students en
gaged in a holiday festival in the col
lege hall. Adjoining this hall is the
music room. During the festival Un
derhill entered with one of the white
teachers and passed through to the mu
sic room, which was unoccupied.
Several students followed him. Under
hill requested the negro students to re
turn to the main hall which he said had
been turned over to them for the occa
sion, while the music hall would be
occupied by the whites, meaning him
self and the lady accompanying him.
“You are living in the College, why
should yourefuse to associate with us?”
asked on** of the students.
“Living in the building and associa
ting with you are different things,”
was the answer.
“Then you had better get out. We
are not used to being snubbed by the
white people here.”
A hot discussion ensued, and the next
day President Hickman was again re
quested by the students to remove Un
derhill, hut, he refused.
New Year’s eve the windows of the
dormitory where Underhill was quar
tered were smashed in with rocks, pis
tols wi n fired through the windows
and doors and a general hair-raising
time was had. Dr. Hickman placed
the matter in the hands of detectives,
and four of the students were arrested,
but afterwards discharged. Yesterday,
however, one of the four. W. A. Sam
uels. was rearrested while competing
for a teacher’s place in the examination
at the Courthouse, charged with carry
ing concealed weapons and being im
plicated in the rumpus. He was plac
ed under bond.} There is great excite
ment among the students, but Under
hill still remains in his quarters in the
girls’ dormitory.

tlie reach of human aid.
When a reporter reached him he was
stretched on his hack with a handker

when removed, displayed a ghastly
wound in the face aud head. His en

sickening, showing clearly that death
was instantaneous.
His poor, widowed mother was at

were moved to tears, wh n she, frantic
with grief, rushed to the side of her
dead boy, imploring those around her
to help her in her sad misfortune.
Frank Davis was an indestrious, no

employers. He was a great help to his
widowed mother who has three small
children, the ehlesta girl of 13 years, to
support.
The Georgia Range and Stove com

A SCHOOLTEACHER ARRESTED.
On a Charge of False Swearing to
Make a Little Money*
Dallas, Ga., Jan. 7—(Special).—
Pinkie O, Spain, a neatly dressed mu
latto girl, nearly white, was arrested
here last • ight and locked up in jail on
a charge of false sweating.
The girl s from Atla-ta, where her
father is a well to do blacksmith.
She is a graduate of one of the At
lanta colored colleges, and obtained a
position of nnblic i-ehool teacher in
Paulding county last July.
When the three months, July. Au
gust and September ha . expired, Pinkie
sent in her account, amounting to $151.-
82. to County School Commissioner I..
M. Washington. He began inquiring
into the matter and found tha* the par
ents of twelve or fifteen of the scholars
Pink e claimed to have taught said
their children had never been to her
school.
Last night the girl, accompanied by
bet* father, came to Dallas to collect her
money.
Mr. Washington told her to come
over to the court house. She did so,
accompanied hy her father The Slier-
ill" was also there, and on presenting
the account toher, Pinkie took on an
oath that it was correct.
Mr. Washington required her to sign
the oath, witnessed by tlie sherifi, and
then to her consternation, instead of
receiving her money, she was arrested
anil locked in jail.
This morning a warrant was sworn
out against her, and she will most pro
bably begiven a trial this week.

Birmingham, Ala., Jan. 8—[Special,]
—A sensational domestic tragedy was
enacted at Bessemer, twelve miles dis
tant, yesterday. William Raplec, a ho
tel-keeper, was shot twice, and badly
wounded by his wife. Raplee had been
drinking, and when he reached home
talked very naughtily to his wife. Mrs.
Raplee finally lost her temper, and,
snatching a pistol fired twice. Raplee

The Alarming Use of Terra Alba iu Its
Manufacture.
Tlie Board of Trade Journal, of Port
land, Me., is authority for the state
ment that about 0,000 tons of terra alba
were recently imported through tlie
port of New York alone. The only use
for terra alba in any quantity is in the
aduberation ot candies; and when these
two lacts are put together they become
very significant. The substance is min
eral, utterly insoluble in tlie saliva or
tlie gastric juice, and the result of eat
ing candies adulterated cannot bo oth
erwise than excessively injurious. The
devilishuess of the use of such stutf in
candies is all the greater for tlie fact
that most of tlie candies that arc adul
terated with it are used hy children of
tender years. The extent to which it ex
ists in certain candies may by surmised
byan incident which occurred within the
experience of the editor of the National
Druggist. A wholesale grocery house
of 81. Louis made a claim against tlie
South Shore Line for damages done a
certain lot of lozenges manufactured by
a Boston house, and shipped in barrel’s
over that line. The general agent of
of the line procured some of the “loz
enges” and brought them to the writer
for examination. The result of our in
vestigation showed them to oon.-ist nl-
most entirely of terra alba, hound to
gether with a little gelatin or gum (we
have forgotten which). Further inves
tigation developed the fact that they
were simply blocks or forms to be used
in preparing cheap lozenges, the meth
od of use being simply to immerse them
for a few moments in syrups flavored
with peppermint, wintergreen, etc.
Tho agent, armed with these facts, re
fused to pay any damages, and the con
cern, rather thatqrisk tlie exposurej in
cident upon a law suit, dropped the
claim.—[National Druggist.

Carl Timbaltz thus describes lie can

“Tlie natives of Northern Queens
land and of many other parts of A us-
trilia are cannibals. The greatest deli
cacy known to tlie Australian native is
human flesh. Wben 1 asked my men
what part of the human body they lilted
best they always struck their thighs.
They never eat tlie head or entrails.
The most delicate morsel of all is the
fat about the kidneys. By eating this
they believe that they acquire a part of
the slain person’s strength, and, so far
as 1 could understand, this was even
more true of the kidneys themselves.

THE KIDNEYS ARE THE CENTER Of LIFE.
“The natives on Herbert River are
particularly fond of the lat of a dead
foe, which is not only eaten as a delica
cy and as a strengthening feed, but is
also carried as an amulet. A small
pieee is done up in grass and kept in a
basket worn around the neck, and tlie
effect of this is, in their opinion, - access
in the chase, so that, they can easily
approach the game. As a rule the
Australian natives do not eat persons
belonging to their own tribe. i*know
instances to the contrary, and I have
