ought not to have done, and left un«
done things that I ought to have
done ; but no man can truthfully
accuse ute of being false to my party,
my friends or my convictions. 1
never rode the fence on any issue,
and never expect to do so.
1 know I have built up strong ene
mies in Athens by my editorial
course on certain matters that did
not meet the approval of a few iniii**
viduals. Take, for instance, my
fight for the supremacy of the white
race, and when Mr. Rusaeil’s paper
was protesting against the expose I
made of the insults offered by ne
groes to white ladies and children oa
the streets of Athens 1 When 1
showed up the infamy of appointing
an ignorant negro as postmaster at
Athens, and denounced the white
men that recommended him for the
po dtion, that did not meet the ap»
provat of other parties, who the shoe
pinched.
But I care not for popularity or
public favor. I know 1 am in the
right, and will finally triumph over
my adversaries.
I have made no personal war upon
Mr. Olive, but suppressed documents
that would have deeply mortified and
injured him. I have opposed him
upon the highest grounds, and did
not 8loop to slander or abuse.
As to the personal paragraphs
written by the reputed editoi of the
Ledger, I care nothing for them
recognize in Mr. McGough only the
weak instrument of others, and do
not propose have my fire drawn by
such small game. Why, what does
McGough know about the politics of
the 8th district ? He has only been
here a few weeks, and when our in
lelligent voters desire to import po
lilical advisers from abroad, they
will select better timber, and not
nominate Mr. K. B. Russell to do
the choosing for them, cither.
I learn that certain of Mr. Olive’s
friends in Oglethorpe are making
public threats against me if I dare
to visit Lexington. I will state to
the gentlemen, tbat while I seek no
difficulty—and will do all in my pow
er and that a gentleman can to avoid
one—at the same time 1 do not care
to lie threatened out of the privilege

A little devil!
And a black one!
The most dastardly and damnable
attempt ever heard of in Athens!
A fourteen year old negro girl tries
twice to burn up the house of Mrs. R.
M. Smith!
And confesses It!
Saying she did it because she “was
mad.”
Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Wells and her chil
dren. were alone in their house iu
Cobbhaui, Monday night, when, about
ten o’clock the odor of something burn
ing reached them. investigation
showed that there was a fire kiudled
just under the room of the latter.
The alarm was given aud with the
assistance of neighbors, it was soon ex
tinguished. ’
n was clearly of incendiary origin,
and made the second attempt within
two weeks to burn the house.
There was no one who could be
thought of who desired such an awful
calamity to happen to the family, but
from the first attempt suspicion pointed
to a little girl employed as nurse.
The uegro is only about fourteen and
goes under the name of Florida Thomas.
Just after tho first attempt, she was ac
cused of it, and denied it so emphati
cally as only to increase the suspicions
of the family. Monday moruing she
was' discharged, and that night the
second attempt was made.
Yesterday morning Mr. E. I. Smith
began making investigations, and as
sisted by policemen Keily, Goodrum
and Culp succeeded iu getting evidence
enougli to convict.
It seems that Florida had told another
uegfo girl of about eight years that »he
had made the attempt, and would do it
again when she got mad.
This girl was seen and said that such
was true.
Will guarantee highest prices for
you on commission.
