THE MAIDS OF PARADISE
By ROBERT W. CHAMBERS
(OoDtinued from Yesterday)*
cat had disappeared; I tmr-
tarsed the garden, passed through the
aide wicket, aadt found myself on the

aware of a young girl, a child, seat
ed on the rocks, her chin propped' on
her hands, the aea-wlnd blowing her
early oU-focks acroee bar oheeka and

lay beside her; a eat dosed In her lap,
Its sleek tor stirring In the wind.
"Jacqueline!" I said, gently. *1
thought yon were to sail from Lorfent
today?"
The cat stepped pairing from her
knees; the child roae, pushing hack
her hair from her eyes with boM
hands.
"Where is Speed?" she asked,
drowsily.
"Did you west to see his
line?"
"That is why 1 returned."
"And you are going to gteo nptke

"Just
Speed?"
"Only tor that!**
She stood rubbing her eyes with
her small lists, as though jest awak
ened.
"Come Into the garden," I saM; "we
can talk while you rest"
The yonng countess was standing a*
the window as we approached hi sol
emn single file along the path, and
when she caught sight of ns ehe
opened the door and stepped oat on
the tiny porch.
"Why, this Is our little Jacqueline,"
sho said, quickly. "They haws taken
your father for the conscription, hare
they not my child? And now you
are homeless?"
"I think so, madams"
"Then you will stay with me until
he returns, won't you, little one?"
"We thank you, and permit our-
selves to aooept, madame," said Jae-
quellne. "We are very glad beoanse
we are quite hungry, and we bare
thorns from the gorse In our feet— 1
She broke off with a Joyous tittle cry
•"There is Speed?" And Speed, enter
ing the garden
short in his tracks.
The child ran to him and threw
both arms around his neck. "Oh,
Speed! Speed!" she stai
and over again. "I was too lonely; 1
will do wbat you wirti; 1 will be In
structed in the graces of education—
truly I will. I am glad to come back—
and I am so tired. Speed. I will
go away from you again, , • , Oh,
Speed, I am coat exited!

dountess. and lifted h|s hat,
stepped back and fixed me with a
blank look of dismay, whloh said per
fectly plainly that he had unpleasant
news to oonrmnnioate. The countess,
I think, saw that look, too. tor she
gave me an ehnoet imperceptible nod
and took JaoqueUncfe hand In hen.
"If there are thorns In your feet we
must find them," she said, sweetly.
"Will yob come. Jacqueline?"
"Yes, madame," said the ohtid, with
an adoring smile at Speed, who heat
and kiused her upturned face as she
passed.
"Well," said J. turning to Speed,
"what new deviltry la going on In
Paradise now?”
"Preparations for train-wrecking, I
should say," he replied, bluntly. "They
are tinkering with the trestle. Buck-

“The Giri of the Underworld.”
“The Girl of the Underworld,” that
plays at the Colonial theater Friday
night, October 31, has the distinction
of beinv the prevailing thought that
“The Girl of the Underworld” is
risque, vulgar, and suggestive. Its
author, Jack Gorman, wishes to an
nounce emphatically that “The Girl
of the Underworld” will not offend or
suggestive line in this play. Mothers,
brothers, sisters and sweethearts,
don’t for one second hesitate about
seeing “The Girl of the Underworld.”
It tells the truth, it tells facts; it is
a great big, grand one night’s enter
tainment. See a touch of true to na
ture sentiment in “The Girl of the
Underworld.” You will be better mor
ally, physically, mentally and intel
lectually after seeing the greatest
play in a decade.
Primrose and Dockstader.
George Primrose and his old part
ner of yester years, Lew Dockstader,
consolidated their respective minstrel
companies last season and made a
tour of the principal cities of the
United States and Canada. Every
point visited gave the veteran stars
capacity audiences. This season
Messrs. Primrose and Dockstader have
surrounded themselves with an all-
company and are presenting a
big revival of old time minstrelsy.
Coming to the Colonial theatre for
one performance only at an early date.
