Key West-Havana Ferry.
Key Wect, Fla., January 8.—The
Flagler System is completing plans
to run ferries between Key West and
Ilavana, Cuba, daily. Immense ferry
boats to be Used in the service are al
ready under construction in Philadel
phia shipyards. The company is at
present engaged in dredging out the
basin surrounding the proposed site
of their terminal docks and the dock
now in uac, and today there is a depth
of water alongside the dock of 27 feet.
The work of dredging has answered a
double purpose, inasmuch as the mud
sucked up by the dredges has been
used to fill in the lower portions of
what is known as Trumbe Island, a
large body of land which was “made”
by the Flagler System. The land was
named for Howard Trumbe, the well-
known contractor, who had charge of
this particular portion of the work.
The dock now in use, which is 2,000
feet v.iH soon be removed. I:
has been surrounded by massive walk
of reenforced concrete, inside of which
is being pumped rock and marl to
make a permanent and indestructible
pier. The now dock will be much wider
than the one now in use, but will be
shortened to a length of 1,200 feet.

POSTMASTER GENERAL
COMPLIMENTS POSTAL •
EMPEOTEES OF 0, S,
Posthmaster Geneial Burleson has
issued the following letter of praise
to the employees of the postal service
for the efficient manner in which they
handled the big Christmas business of
the department:
“Office of the Postmaster General,
“Washington, Jan. 1, 1914.
“To the Officers and Employees of
the Postal Service:
“The splendid manner in which
every employee of the postal service,
in the Department and in the field,
acquitted himself in handling the
enormous quantity of mail during the
recent holiday season is not only a
source of deep gratification to me, but
a pride to every American citizens. Al
though the parcel post more than dou
bled the usual volume of Christmas
mail, the task of handling this mail
proved not so much a test of the ca
pacity of the postal service as an op
portunity for the employees to demon
strate their ability to meet all emer
gencies. The result is a substantial
evidence of the energy, resourceful
ness, efficiency, and loyalty of every
employee, wSicxcvei his post of duty,
from the highest to the most incon
spicuous. This achievement assures
me that all emergencies of the future
will be promptly and effectively met.
“I extend to you my- very best
wishes for a happy and prosperous
New Year.
