“Lena Rivers" the play presented
last night at the Colonial theater by
the Ina Lehr Stock Company, was
welcomed by a packed house, the play

the company did credit to the big one

Miss Lehr and the members of her
company have gained the friendship
of the patrons, and are becoming fast
favorites about Athens people, this
was demonstrated at last night’s per
formance, by the reception that many
members of her company received
upon their entrance. The vaudeville
offered between the acts is most
pleasing

CANINE POPULATION OF
BERLIN OH DECREASE
(By Associated Press.)
Berlin, January 22. — The canine
population of Berlin is decreasing
steadily. From 39,926 in 1909, the
number of dogs in the city had
dropped to 34,4443 last year, accord
ing to tax statistics just issued, and
an even greater decrease is estimated
for this year. The increasingly high
cost of living, which makes the saving
of a tax of $7.50 yearly a big item to
poor families, is undoubtedly one ex
planation for the decrease. A fur
ther factor this year is the dog quar
antine law, which has kept the ani
mals muzzled and on leading strings
for several months.
There are 6,740 tax-free dogs in the
city. Eighty of these are owned by
ohe Emperor and the ambassadors and
ministers of foreign nations. There
are 1,174 draught dogs exempt from
tax. The city’s income from the dog
tax is more than $250,000 annually.

MOST SILENT MEMBER
(By Associated Press.)
Paris, January 22.—Jules Sauzedc,
deputy for Carcasaone, who died re
cently, was noted in Paris as the most
nitent member of the chamber of dep
uties. During the sixteen years that
he belonged to the assembly he had
never ascended the tribune once, and
had been known to make only one in
terruption. One day there were very
few members in the chamber, and at
tention was called to the fact that
there was an insufficient number to
continue the discussion. Mr. Sauzede
rose, counted those present, and re-
marked simply, “Thirty-two.”
his only parliamentary speech.
