Peculiar After Effects
Of Grip This Year.
) Leave Kidneys in Weakened Condition
Doctors in all parts of the country
have been kept busy with the epidem
ic of grip which has visited so many

year are often very distressing and
leave the system in a run down con-

victim complains of lame back and
urinary troubles which should not be

REPORT FROM CHAIRMAN
OK "CITY HEALTHFUL”
COMMITTEE.
First wc undertook a general spring
cleaning which was fairly successful
considering how few garbage wagons
the sanitary department owns.
Mayor Rowo very kindly contrib
uted ail city wagons and teams to
assist in the general cleaning.
Next in order was the campaign
against flies, mosquitoes, etc. On
account of Dr. Bloomfield’s absence
from the city, there was very little
accomplished along that line. The
fly ordinance which wo undertook to
have passed through by that body by
council was rather too severe con
sequently failed to pass.
An investigation of the sanitation
of markets, bakeries, groceries, etc.,
was next undertaken. In a way some
good was accomplished, but there ie
room for a very great improvement.
Dust prevention woe the most diffi
cult problem we met with. The city
officiate promised to undertake
a general street sprinkling at ragular
intervale juet as soon as the atreets
were paved and they felt financially
able to d" the work properly.
The sanitary conditions at the rail
road stations were investigated and
found fairly good, but at the sugges
tion if the committee the agents prom
ised to use disinfectants more liber
ally thereby improving the sanitary
conditions.
Respectfully,
MRS. R. BRANDT, Chairman.

TO EXTEND AND SIMPLIFY
WORK OK WOM AN’S CLUBS.
In a group of women recently I
heard a conversation which greatly
interested me. There was something
so sane in what they were trying to
express. The idea was that in unity
there is strength, and in specializing
there is greater strength than in the
individual unit.
Now, these are not new or even
original ideas, but their application
to the present status of affairs among
women organized on various purposes
here in Athens appealed to me as es
pecially good.
This group inftpded women from
the Drama League, Woman’s Club,
Civic Club, U. D. C., D. A. R., Garden
Club, Humane Society, Suffrage
League, Y. W. C. A. and of course
various church and missionary soci
eties. And the group consisted of
four women.
Each one owned to a certain ennui
her work and yet not a lack of in
terest in any of the organisations.
Each wanted to bo loyal to all and yet
could not. Each apokt of noticing the
same general condition among all the
club workers. In trying to discover
the cause, they all reached the same
conclusion that there are too many
roads leading to the same goal, and
in trying to break rocks on each, the
individual so vitiates her strength and
talents as to be really valuable no-,
where.
Undeniably the goal la Athens.
Athens progressing economically, so
cially (In the broad sense) aestheti
cally. Few are granted the gif* to
serve well In all capacities.
How much wiser, therefore, It
would be If each woman who has the
time, means or strength to work for
the public welfare and I believe it is
the sacred obligation of every woman
possessing these things to give of
them as she la able for the benefit of
all, would select the work for which
she has a genuine interest and the
greatest aptitude, and devote heraelf
to it with what real she may, rather
than fairly dismember herself in
order to do a little here and a Uttle
there. Thia, too, would keep the bur
den of the work of the clubs off of
a few capable shooldero, and disperse
it so that all might share aad ns one
feel too greatly the fatigue of tho
course, be it never so worthy.
Could there not bo more of a unify
ing of tho efforts? An Athens club—
anything you choose to call it—con
ducted depart mentally, letting each
worker identity herseit
pleted, to have to furnish the rooms.
Much to their delight this has been ar
ranged for by those in charge of the
furnishings of the rest of the court
house. These rooms so convenient in
themselves and so convenient to the
shopping district, will be a great boon
to the women of the city as well as
to the shoppers coming in from the
country.

Mr. Orr consented to draw plans
for the school grounds for each of the
teachers and go to each school and
teach the plan as a lesson if the
teachers desired if and if both teach
er and children would endeavor to
carry out his plans. The plans for
two of the schools were drawn by Mr.
Orr and turned over to Dr. McHatton
to be filled in for planting.
The committee asked the city for an
appropriation for $300 to be used for
the purpose of buying shrubs, etc.,
and for paying for the labor that the
children could not do. The money
was secured and the $300 is in the
treasury of the school board to be
used through them for that purpose
as the teachers need it.
It was felt by the committee that
It would be wise to endeavor to arouse
public interest and sympathy in the
work and to that end it was decided
to get a man familiar wijj, sqhopl
ground improvement to-give a public
lecture. This with the idea that eur
vision of what it would mean to have
beautiful, well kept school grounds
would be broadened and that the bene
ficial influence such grounds would
have upon tee children both from liv
ing in and working in them would be
emphasized. For this purpose the
committee did engage Mr. Van Kil
Patrick, president of the school ground
association Jo Antarica to oomhwitlif
his lantern slides of the school garden
work done in America, 1 Japan, Phil,
ippinea, etc.
Only fifty dollars had to be raised
to pay his expensaa since he was en
tertained at Mrs. Hodgson's. Each
member of the committee teas respon
sible for a certain amount of this.
The money was raised
also enough to pay for

Our idea is to get the chamber of
