Grand Opera for Athena on February
4th.
The San Carlo Grand Opera Com
pany, which comes to the theater for
a period of one day is to the great
capitals of South America, Cuba and
Mexico, and the large cities of the
Pacific Coast, what the Chicago Grand
Opera is to the cities of the Pacific
Coast, what the Chicago Grand Opera
is to the cities of Philadelphia and
those of the middle west. The seasnn
of the San Carlo forces is, perhaps, the
longest of any such organization, ow
ing to the fact that some four or five
months each year arc devoted to the
important cities of the Spanish-Amer-
ican republics. This year impresario
Gallo is spending eight months on
United States and British American
soil. The transcontinental tour of this
large company of Italian singers be
gan in San Francisco in September
and will terminate in New Orleans in
April . The San Carlo company trav
els in its own special train of five
cars, and its roster of principals,
among whom ara many world-famous
singers, numbers twenty. A note
worthy featip-e of the San Carlo per
formances is an exceptionally fine or
chestra under the direction of the
wonderful “scoreless” director, the
Chevalier Giuseppe Angclini. The
famous maestro directs all the mas
terpieces without the aid of score or
baton, and is said to be the only liv
ing conductor capable of so doing.
Signor Gailo has been discriminating
in the matter of repertory to be sung
here. The opera selected for the big
San Carlo engagement is “Lucia di
Lammermoor.” From Athena the
company goes to Atlanta for three
days.
Honey Boy.
John King will again shine in the
new program of minstrelsy which
George “Honey Boy” Evans has con
structed for this yealr and which will
be seen at the Colonial theater in the
near future. ■ ■>
It is a well-known fact that King Is
one of the ablest End Men of the mip-
strel world, as a dander, •’‘singer and
Joker he is Without a peer in Ms pro
fession. His characterizations in the
wench line are well known and always
truthful and adequate, while his im
personations of the over-dressed,
flashy coon female are always
source of merriment. In this year’s
offering John King will hold down one
of the “Ends” of the First Part, and
in the middle portion of the new pro
gram he plays in “Dinah's Wedding
Pay,” in the rolee of "Mammy Lindy”
and “Dinah Valdosta Green,” George
Evans has composed a song especially
for King, entitled, “The Moony, Moony
Man,” and aided by twelve of the
most diminutive dancers of the com
pany as pickanninies while in the role
of “Mammy Lindy” the able comedian
adds one of the real hits of the show.
In the new finale portion "The Black,
ville Balloonatics,” he plays the rqle
of Susannah Snodgrass.

EXPOSE OF INEFFICIENT POLICE

BLAMEABLE ON CORRESPONDENTS
Atlanta, January 26.—Chief of po

Men and Religion Forward Movement
are criticizing newspaper correspond
ents in Atlanta for sending out stories
reflecting upon the effi<^ncy of the
police department and deploring the
increase during recent months of va
rious kinds of crimes in Atlanta.
It is a fact that a great many such
stories have been sent out by various
correspondents in Atlanta, and have
been published, sometimes with sen
sational headlines by daily and week
ly papers all over the South, but the
attention of Chief Beavers is now be-

One of the things upon which Mr.
Keller justly prides himself is the
high class of his clientele. Those
who consult him are the very best
people of the city, not supqrstititious,
fanatical or ignorant persons, but men
and women of ripe intelligence and
judgment. Those who adhere to the
belief in atellar influence, and those
who do not, have found in him a won

and a man with a remarkable intui

Count that day queer whose low
decending sun brings no Mex. wire
that Huerta has a bun.—Ex.
took it up, and that the charges of
inefficiency made against his depart
ment are legitimate news in that they
have been made over and over again
by Atlanta citizens, in many instances
the most prominent and looked-up-to
citizes in the community.
The stories sent over the state that
the charges-had been made in At
lanta that the close of the segregated
vice district simply scattered vice all
over the city and did as much harm
as good, were sent only after that
identical view of the situation had
been widely expressed in Atlanta.
The Men and Religion leaders them
selves arc under fire for slandering
the good name of Atlanta, and for
painting untrue conditions. The chief
of police and his department are be
ing criticised openly in Atlanta pa
pers as being unable to cope with
the increased number of crimes that
has come with the growth of the
city. Friends of Chief Beavers say
the trouble is lack of funds and not
enough men on the force. Opponents
'of the chief say the department ia
poorly organized and poorly handled.
These things may not reflect credit
upon Atlanta, butrthe situations ac
tually exist and are not fabrications
of the correspondents’ mind3. As long
as they do exist they will be written
ents and by the Atlanta papers. A
about both by the Atlanta correspond-
perusal of the state press for a period
of months past will shc&, if compared
to what has been published in the At
lanta papers, that the charges writ
ten about haye actually been made,
and have been commented on here in
Atlanta before they ever reached the
outside world.
