GRUESOME HOAX ON
DALTON WATER USERS
Dalton, Ga., April 30.-The rumor
that a man had been killed and his
body tossed into the mamoch concrete
reservoir of the waterworks system,
on top of Mt. Rachel, sent fully five
hundred people to mountain Mon
day afternoon. The croftd grew big
ger when workmen were seen drawing
off the water. They were, however,
merely engaged in claning it out. Th
one who perpetrated the grewsome
hoax had the satisfaction of seeing
fully a half-thousand people “bit#.’*
Washington, D. G, April 30.—The
Southern Commercial Congress re
ceived a cablegram today from Lon
don conveying the information that
under the presidency of the Duke of
Teck an enthusiastic meeting of thirty
British mayors had been held and that
the reception committee had been
foiWd and an executive committee
appointed to receive the commission on
municipal executives and civic leaders
being assembled by the Southern
Commercial Congress to participate in
the International Congress of Munici
pal Executives to convene in London
July 20th.
This commission, brought together
by the Southern Commercial Congress,
will leave New York July 9th on the
Asiatic and after adjournment of the
international congress 'in London will
participate in a southern commercial
congress week at the International
Urban Exhibition to be held in Ly
ons, France, under the patronage of
the French republic. Immediately
thereafter the delegates will make an
exhaustive investigation of civic
problems in Italy, Switzerland, Bel
gium, Austria, Hungary, Germany
and Holland.
Senator Hoke Smith has offered a
joint resolution in the senate of the
United States, instructing the state
department to invoke for the commis
sion diplomatic courtesies in the coun
tries to be included in the itinerary.
Governors of states are appointing
representatives.
J. Horace McFarland, president of
the American Civic Association, com
menting upon the commission, said:
“It seems to me that the aim of the
Southern Commercial Congress in this
matter is notable, high and fine, and
that the good which should result may
be very great.”
The Southern 'Commercial Congress
last year conducted the investigation
plans to render a service to urban
America just as definite as that al
ready conferred upon the rural com
munities of the south and the natjon.
The findings of this commission will
be «ade the basis of the program of
the sixth annual convention of the
Southern Commercial Congress, to be
held in Muskogee, Okla* November
11-14, 1914.
