Slugging usually, decides thn frorkl
won the world, cha*npk>flahiifc ftirj
ton; it was Frank Baker’s home run
drives that gave the Athletics the lull
championship.
The records show that , the Phillies
rank as one of the grehtest slugging
outfits of this or any other age and if
they bat up to regular season fora,
during the world scries the Red Sox
seem certain of a: beating. • •
These are some of the facts revealed
by a study of the last available slug-
king records: ' , '
Cravath, the demon douter of Pat
Moran’s tribe, has poled out 23 circuit
swats, which is nearly double the num
ber made by, the whole Red Sox team,
of twenty-two men. ' .
This Speaker, the heavy hitter Of
the Red Sox, hasn’t made a home run
all season, although he has P>»yed In
150 games and been at bat about 560
Philadelphia National League Field, Philadelphia.
James E. Gaffney, owner of the Braves’ Field in Boston, home of the present world champions, the newest and largest baseball park in the country, has made arrangements to permit the Red
Sox, the rival to his club in Boston, to use hrs grounds in the wor Id series with Philadelphia. The games in Philadelphia will be played in the National League Park.
Gaffney’s new park will seat 45,000 persons, and it is possible to put a stand in the field from right center to left which w ill seat 20,000 more. At the regular prices Braves Field will hold
$30,000. But the returns from the crowd at the world series will run much higher because of the higher prices. The Philadelphi a park will seat 22,000, but a stand in the field might add several
thousand more.
IN DOES NOT STOP
With only two more days left in
which to get ready for the Chatta
nooga team Jhe Georgia eleven is
practicing every day in the rain in
order to be in shape.
Yesterday a workout was held in
the rain as was the one day before
yesterday. The lineup is r.ot .'.hanged
except that Captain Tiny Henderson
is at center. Paddock knows the
signals because he has be?n teaching
them to the second string mdn. He
could be used Saturday if the occas
ion arose. -
In the scrimmage yesterday the
scrubs scored on the 'varsity once
and the first team also seqred on the
scrubs. The scrub’s touchdown was
made in this manner: they had been
bucking for two or three yards at a
time for about two downs when all of
a sudden someone got away in u
broken field. Two or three tackled at
him but he dodged and sidestepped
them and went the distance for a
touchdown. The runner was Paddock,
he having replaced a man on the play
before.

Experienced Smokers “Roll Their Own
“Bull” Durham is not the smoke of novices or dabblers in tobacco
enjoyment, but of connoisseurs, smokers of experience, whose
tastes have been trained to a fine discrimination and appreciation
of tobacco quality. These men—and their name is legion—prefer
the ffesh cigarettes they roll for themselves with mellow, delicious
“Bull” Durham tobacco to any other kind. Their expert preference
has made it smart, fashionable, correct, to roll your own with

LEAVES FRIDAY FDR
The Georgia team will leave Ath
ens Friday afternoon for Chattanooga
and will put up at thp Hotel Patten
on that night. It is, probable that
Coach Cunningham wifi take about
twenty men along'with nim. These
men will probably be:;Captain Hen
derson and O’Kelley, centers; Con
yers, Garmany and Culbreath,
guards; McConnell, Thrash and Win
gate, tackles; Hunter, Tate, Thomp
son and Floyd, ends; Powell, Mc-
Laws.halfs; Beasley, Holtzendorf and
Neville, fulls, and Uezendorf nad
Coleman, quarterbacks. *
Against this team will line up the
strong Chattanooga bunch as follows:
WEIGHTS.
Orr, left end, 165 pounds; Langley,
left tackle, 170; McKay, left guard,
175; McKenzie, center, 185; Wyatt,
right guard, 160; Eldridge, right
tackle. 185; McWhorter, right end,
145; Hampton, full, 190; Woodward,
quarter, 140; Squibbs, right half, 165,
and Vandiver, left half, 165 pounds.
Finley, of Sewance, will referee and
Sclden also of Sewance, will act as
head linesman. The umpire has not
been selected yet.
On the arrival of the team in Chat
tanooga they will be given an auto
mobile ride around the city, which
will be arranged by the Georgia
alumni of that city, with John (Fort
in charge. The. ride will be over Mis
sionary Ridge and Chicamauga Park.
If it is possible the team will stay
over for a dance at- the Country Club
on Saturday night.
J.. B. Wight, Georgia’s all-time all-
southern end of Warner’s 1896 team,
is in the athletic supply business in
Chattanooga and Is helping, very much
to advertise the game. p -
Chattanooga Is expecting to win
and they are workThg hard to brtit
the Georgians. Coach Cunningham
said of them this morning: “Chat
tanooga defeated Carson Newman 93
to 0. Tennessee defeated the same
team on the previosu Saturday by the
score of 101 to 0. So the teams are
equally as strong and Tennessee has
practically the same team that she
had last year.
“Georgia will be lucky to slip over
a victory. Chattanooga really ex
pects a victory. They have practiced
for this particular game since August
“Vandiver, the reputed longest
punter in the south, from Rome, Ga.,
is enrolled in the Chattanooga ranks
as left half. Hampton, a 190 pound
full back, is a five year veteran and
is faster than ever this year and
shows class. Woodward is . a fast
elusive dodger and one of the best
quarterbacks in the south.”
Chattanooga is really a very for
midable opponent and Georgio will
have her hands full in beating this
team.
STANDING OF THE CLUB
Bancroft, an<t Mderua, anprawH,
and first baseman of the Phillies, to
gether have made as many home rup»
this year aa the whole Red Sox team.
The Phillies have made fifty-five
homers so far this year; the Red Sox
0I1 Harry Hoopi^ with fourteen triples
leads both Clubs in that department.
His nearest rivals are Hoblitsel .
Speaker, tied at twelve each. ,
Luderuo leads both clubs in two bag- ’
gers with a total of thirty-five. Cra. •
vath is second with thirtytwo, Lewis
third with twenty-nine, Niohoff fiurth
with twenty-seven ana Speaker fifth,
with twenty-four. ,,
Another strange fact brought opt
by the records is that Cravath, has,
smashed out almost four times _ as
many homers as tripiss—-probably the
most peculiar and remarkable feat ip,',
the slugging line. (
Tere are two tables that may fur
nish a bit of reflective food. They
list the slugging achievements of the
eight men on each side who are most
likely to be regulars in each of-the -,
combats. . _
The records show that the eight
Phillies are leading the eight, Red
Sox by seventy extra bases in the
