Could You Get Along With Half
Your Present Physical and
Mental Strength?
Could you make u living if your
physical and mental strength were
cut in half?
There is n disease which has just
that effect on human beings. It is
the “hookworm disease.”
It affects mainv the inhabitants of
the southern states. It is caused by a
little worm that is shaped like a hook.
Hence its name.
The hookworm is only half an inch
long and about as large as “No. 8”
sewing cotton. It lives by sucking
blood from the internal organs of a
human being and it soon perishes
outside the body. It is so small that
the amount of blood it might suck
would seem to bo a trifle. But when
there may be, as often there arc, hun
dreds and even thousands of the
worms in the body, the loss of blood Is
very serious. But this loss is not all
Tomake the blood more fluid and eas
ier to suck the hookworm pours into
the blood a constant stream of poison
and, at the same time is steadily
making minute sores on the organs
it has attached itself to.
The effects of a large number of
hookworms in the i.ystem is shown
chiefly in the blood. This becomes
thin and watery, loses its normal red,
becomes almost colorless and cannot
sustain the bodv. The result is ex
treme pallor, tne skin assumes u
pasty, tallow-yellow hue and is rough
and deeply lined.
In severe cases the hair »• coarse
and dry, the face swollen am! puffy,
the abdomen and often the feet and
legs, may be enlarged, the mind is
dull and the victim js slow to under
stand and to reply 10 questions. This

While hookworm is a disease to be
dreaded it is easily cured now. All
that has tp be done is to drive the
worms from the system «nd the pa
tient will get well of himself.
The most successful treatment is
thymol. This is a gum with a pun
gent, pleasant odor obtained from the
flowering shrub thyme which was
grown in all old-time gardens. This
remedy is given by mouth and under
normal conditions has no ill effect
on the patient.

“Why, this affair would collapse

surprise, indicating where the knot;
on one side were all tied wrongly.
“That’s all right, -sir,” replied th#
maker of the knots, calmly. “This
bridge is designed for the enemy to
cross, not our men.”

MONOCLES*BECOMING
FIXED IN PUBLIC EYE
London.—Since the beginning of the
war the cult of the single eyeglass has
been spteading slowly but significant
ly—“monocles are tiecoming fixed
the public eve,” as one newspaper
says. “There has never been a great
demand for monocles,” says a Lon
don optician, “but certainly we have
sold more than usual during the last
few months. The fashion seems to
have declined in the army and our
hief customers are men just
military age.
“Why do men wear monocles? Un
doubtedly the single eyeglass confers
distinction on the right sort of man
but scarcely one man ih a thousand
can sustain the distinction.
To .Wear a monocle successfully a
man must he perfectly Pressed. A
monocle and baggy trousers are an im
possible combination. Probably one
of the reasons why monocles are be
coming popular with middle-aged Then
the reluctance of the man of forty
to be eclipsed by the glamor of uni
form.
“Undoubtedly in the light sort of
man the monocle conveys a subtle dis
tinction of superiority. It either em
phasizes or obscures personality;
there is no middle way.”

! Perhaps Your Backache
I Comes From Kidneys
Kidneys Often Run Down, Get Slug
gish, Need Regulation. How
to Tell.
Not all backaches are kidney back
aches, but many of them are and at
the first sign of back pains, twinges
or weakness in the kidney regions it
is a good plan to use a good safe kid
ney regulator such as a little Solvax,
as even two or three doses will often
enable you to sec right where your
kidneys stand.
If the kidneys are all right Solvax
won’t do them a bit of harm and if
they are weakened or run down it will
do them a world of good, for Solvax
acts directly on sluggish kidneys and
cleans and strengthens them so that
almost immediately they begin to fil
ter and sift out of your body all the
clogged up poisonous impurities from
the blood. Solvax usually will act in
le&s than twenty-four hours and with
the kidneys acting normally you
should begin to feel better right
away. Solvax is a guaranteed remedy
for Disordered Kidneys in that H. R.
Palmer & Sons and leading druggists
everywhere, who sell it agree to re
turn its price in any case if it does
not give perfect satisfaction. There
is no time like the present for doing
a thing that ought to be done and if
there is any doubt about the kidneys 1
today is the best time to find it out
before serious trouble may begin.

—the finest Resort Hotel in the World. It
is absolutely fireproof and open all the year.
The 120-acre, 18-hole, golf course is the
finest in the South—it is a blue grass
course. All the water used at the Inn
comes from the slopes of Mount Mitchell,
the highest mountain east of the Rockies]
nearly seven thousand feet altitude. The
milk and cream come from Biltmore Dairy
on the estate of the late Geo. W. Vanderbilt.
It is the cleanest, most sanitary hotel ever
built. Every floor is tile. Every bedroom
has Mosaic tile covered with French rugs
made at Aubusson, France. The foods are
the finest money can buy. The kitchen is
spotless white tile to the roof and pure
white Mosaic tile floors. The buildings are
built of great mountain boulders—some
of the walls are five feet thick.
We are three and a half miles from the
railroad. The street cars are not allowed
to come near enough to be heard. We
burn coke—not soft coal. Automobiles
not allowed near the building during the
night. Thus we have no smoke, no dust,
no train noise. We have pure air, common-
sense, digestible food, quiet in the bed
rooms at night, the finest Orchestra
outside of New York and Boston, a great
organ, and an atmosphere where refined
people and busy business men with their
families find great comfort and a good time.
