. Friday the trirteenth! One almost
unconsciously trinks of bad luck, trou.
ble and black cats! But to those who
arc so fortunate as to know and love
Mrs. W. P. Welch, the day holds
nothing but joy and gladness—for
December 13 is her blrtrday.
Mrs. Welch comes from a well
known and cultured family, the White
family, long prominent in businesa
and social life.
Of that large family only two
members of the older generation re
main, Mrs. W. J. Morton, who cele
brated her birthday only last week,
end Mrs. Welch.
Mrs. Welch has been confined to
her bed for several weeks past, but
now to the delight of her countless
friends, she is on the high road to
recovery.
Several days ago, in speaking of
her oncoming birthday she said
her family and friends: “Don’t any of
you spend any unnecessary money on
me this birthday. Just send me
card.” , ,
So, today, Mrs. Welch is receiving
hundreds of cards of congratulations
from her friends.
Mrs. Welch is one of Athens’ most
prominent women, cultured, gracious,

Several days ago The Herald start
ed its Empty Stocking fund. You
can barely realize that there are eome
children in Athena who will not have
a full stocking on Christmas morn
ing. It is true.nevertheless and to
keep the dear little faces bright and
the lips smiling is the wish'^f The
Herald and the purpose of the fund.
Won’t you contribute to it? Mrs.
Carroll will receive your bit and turn
it over to a committee who will see
that the empty stockings are filled.
