MICKY WALKER IN
CIVIL-IAN AND FIGHTING TOGS.
Will Uplift the Stage.
Britton Beat Kid Lewis.
Britton won the championship from
'‘Kid” Lewis at New Orleans April
21. 1916. Jack held the tit’e a little
more than a year, Lewis winning !t
back when he received the decision
over Britton at Dayton, O,. June 25,
1917.
Lewi3 held the honors for two
years. During that time he met
Britton a number of no-decision bouts,
the critics usually disagreeing as to
the. winner.
Britton then sprang a pugllistU
surprise by knocking out Lewis Iff
nine rounds at Canton, O., March
17, 1919. Britton has held the title
since, finally surrendering it tl
Mickey Walker on points.
How long will Mickey Walker hold
the welterweight title?
v Some ’Of the boxing experts are in
clined to the belief that Mickey’s ten
ure will be a short one.
There are a ba*.f dozen welters en
titled to a match ‘with Walker and
everyone of them Is a dangerous con
tender. •
George Ward and Jack Malone,
who hold decisions over Walker, are
more than anxious for a shot at the
new champion. Johnny Karr, who
has a verdict over Malone, is equally
anxious. Then there is Dave Shade,
the brilliant Californian,
Jack Bulger, Mickey’s manager, has
temporarily called a halt to the many
challengers by announcing to the
world that Walker would shortly go
on the stage. It Is said bookings cov
ering a period qI three months have
nlready been closed.
Walker, It Is understood, isn’t very
keen for the stage stuff, but his man
ager opines otherwise and, of course,
that settles it.
Walker is the twelfth fighter to
hold the welter title. Walker, by the
way, is the youngest man that ever
won the title in this country. Jack
Britton was the oldest^ boxer to win
and defend the honors of the division.
