Romance and
Detective Story
Thrills Canada
OTTAWA.—Heads of the . Do
minion government sOon wnl pore
over the world’s most thrilling de
tective story, veiled under the le
gal verbiage of a formal report
from the famed Canadian mounted
police.
A mysterious murder, a heroic
avenger, a trek of hundreds of
miles through icy Wastes, all the
romance of the frozen northhmd,
will be elements of the story.
Its setting will be Baffin** Land*
—236,000 frozen square miles,
four times the size of England,
north of Hudson Bay, north of the
Canadian mainland, north of al
most everything save the north
pole.
Its hero will be Staff S.ergeant
Joy of the Canadian Mounties.
ON MURDER
TRAIL
And the story:
News reached Joy that Roberi
Janes, white trader, had beer
slain by Eskimos somewhere ir.
Baffin Land. The news didn’t fil
ter through until nearly a .year
after the crime.
Joy started out behind his‘'dog
team And traveled hundreds of
miles to the scene of the crime.
There he located the body.
Sergeant Jpy Immediately be
came Coroner Joy. He summon
ed a jury of Eskimos, called wit
nesses, held an autopsy.
The jury found the trader had
met death at the hands of three
Eskimos with unpronounceable
names, then supposed tef be 500
miles farther north.
And the witnesses necessary for
a prosecution were scattered
through a wild and almost un-i
traversed country 300 miles long
by 200 miles .wide." To assemble
them would be a labor of years.
JOY AS
MAGISTRATE
So Joy simply sent messages to
them notifying them to appea*
and be arrested!
And so great was the fear of
the > long arm of the mounted po
lice that both' accused and wit
nesses began to filter in volun
tarily to be placed under arrest.
They, were all on hand within two
months.
Then Sergeant Joy end Corpiier
Joy became (Magistrate Joy. He
placed the accused on trial. A
white trader and an Eskimo wo
man were summoned for the (de
fense. The trial lasted ten days.
The accused made statements that
amounted to confessions.
Some time this month a com
plete cofart with counsel for de
fense and prosecution will be sent
up north to try the three accused
slayers again. ..Meanwhile the ac
cused remain .under open arrest,
Xhey’ll probably be executed. Y
