At Winder Burns
of R. L. Woodruff hardware m</-
chant, and the building in which ii
was located belonging to Messrs.
R. ' L. and H. A. Carithers, was de
stroyed by fire here Thursday at
3 a. nf. It is said the stock would
have invoiced around $28,000, and
that it was insured for about
three fourths of that amount. Tho
owners of the "building also car
ried insurance, though how much
it could not be ascertained.
An adjoining building owned by
S. P. Smith, and occupied by a
grocery firm, was completely
wrecked by the crumbling walls
during the fire, and while the con
tents were not burned, it is be
lieved that they will be a total
loss. The firm carried no insur
ance on the stock, but Mr. Smith’s
building was covered, it' is under
stood.
Athens High School Basketeers
Open 1923 Season With Decisive
Victory Over Madison Quintet
(By Hal. G. Jackson.)
Exhibiting a hrand of brilliant basketball that
was not to be denied the Athens High, lads swept
away the Madison High crew last night by the'eount
of 45 to 18. In justice to the visitors we must say that
they appeared off form arid only their real form Was
displayed in- eratic flashes. While they seemed off
form still the fine all-round work of. the Red and
White quintet justly deserved a decisive victory.
Coach Charlie Wiehrs, the. boys’WALTER FORBES
mentor, was highly pleased by tho PLAYS WELL
SALE OF PRODUCTS
showing made by ihs proteges.
His lads plainly showed the ef
fects of his good work. His lads
covered the floor like a bunch of
eagle-eyed ^demons.
The fracas started with a spurt
by the Madison lads which gave
them a temporary lead of four
points' This lead was scon over
come by a brace of baskets by
Forbes the local’s great center. At
the half the Madison boys were
trailing by seven points. The vis
itors played some fine ball in this
period but hard luck on their shots
accounted for their being behind.
WIEHR MEN
START DRIVE
Coming back after the intermis
sion \yith determination and
| deliberation the Wiehrmen started
, a drive that netted them a com
fortable lead. Aided by ''the bril
liant work of Forbes and Mapp in
the danger zone they soon amas
sed some twenty points! At this
juncture Coacher sent his midget
reserves in.
The worthy visitors fought a
good • fight and did not deserve so
rcmel a fate. Every man on the
Jclub fought like a demon but it
‘could be said that they were up
against a much stronger team last
night. This was their initial game
as well as the Iiomelings. They
have the makings of a fine team
and will bear watching in the tour
nament this fall.

mighty Forbes at center was the
outstanding light. This rangy^Iad
was in his glory last night, garn

by Captain Paul Nicholson tho
locals stellar forward. "Nick” has
played better games but his‘ work
last night was highly commend
able.
Fbr the vanquished the work of
Shouse and J. Bearden was best.
Shouse played a nice game at for

Bearden exhibited some nif:y
