Rushin and J. E. Howell went down to Bethel-church Sunday afternoon and helped in the organization of a Sunday School at that place. The attendance upon conrt last week was large on Monday and Tuesday but the weather was so tine that nobody came except those who were compelled to do so. If this weather continues the 1)03’S will take an exceedingly cold bath if they try the creek on the first day of April as they usually do. Remember us with your orders for all kinds of Vegetables, Canned Goods and Groceries. Parlor Grocery. Quite a number of our friends came up promptly with that dollar we told them to bring us at court. And they remembered us of the fact that they paid it before they had time to spend it for anything else. The Atlanta papers are having a row over the.manner of appoint ing a post master for their City. The Constitution wants to hold a primary- and elect one and the Journal wants it done in the old way- There are some knotty cases before Dooly- Superior Court and they naturally consume much time You can’t tell just by dropping in and out the court room the amount of business being done. Go to the minutes and there you will find it. Mr. C. E. Hamilton came down from Baltimore last week to attend court. He reports the lumber trade, ol which he deals very largely-, very- fine now. There were fifty five white teach ers in attendance upon the Insti tute Satudray. Quite‘an interest ing session was held and a great deal ofinterest manifested. The Teachers all go to Albany- on the 3rd of April. Commsssioner Swearingen real izing that the teachers would all need a little money to fix up for the weeks stay in Albany and pay their expenses while there gave them orders Saturday for five or six hundred dollars. We do what others say they do keep the finest line of Cigars and Tobacco in town. Don’t take our word for it, try the goods. Parlor Grocery. Dr. W. S. Howell who we men tioned as locating in Americus has received very strong solicitation to stop at Drayton and has about de cided to do so and will probably •‘fling out his shingle” down there this week. The schools of the county will all be closed the 2nd week in April that the teachers may attend the Chat- auqu at Albany. They are expect ing a good time and a week of “feast of reason and flow of soul.” May their brightest anticipa tions be fulfilled. No imitation goods in ours. We buy- only pure Confectioneries and the prettiest line ever shown here. Try our Candies. Parlor Grocery. We don’t want ali the earth but we would he glad if you would add a dollar to the few we gathered together last week. We know the time will soon he here when shoes are not an absolute necessity but I its much harder to live on wind through the summer than tlie win ter from the fact that the days are much longer and we can’t sleep away so much of the time. An old, blind, banjo picking, patent medicine seller was in town Saturday and the Council charged him five dollars license for selling his medicines! Remit that license, isheo all these, he was sent for # to go to the house quick. And there he found a new ten pound girl baby. Now he wears a what-do-you- reckon-will-happen-next kind of a look while he smiles. Mr. E. B. Lewis got back from Washington and New York last Sunday. Lingo says it was Cleve land snow and democracy in Wash ington. We state that Lige is a Macon county man, which is equivilant to saving he was not in Washington after office.^If he had been from Fort Valley the offices would had to have hid out or he would have come back with both pockets of his pants stufled full of them and all sticking out like a little boys trousers loaded with marbles, tops, nails, flips, etc., but Lige was not from Houston and especially Fort Valley, there fore the offices were safe—Mon tezuma Record. There is a good one told on a certain number of the grand jury. They were at dinner with the la dies when one was heard to exclaim “waiter, come here and take these bones out of my plate so I can eat my dinner”! And sure enough the bones were three inches deep on his plate. They were removed and he ate his dinner. W. A. Greer might tell you the gentle man’s name. Another member took seven pieces of custard out of the same plate thinking that it was a different kind passed to him every time. J. R. Horne might tell you who that was. John Pate had to be excused from the jury— that he might walk about to keep from going to sleep—he said ! School Books and Stationery. Stovall <fc Porbes, Vienna, Ga. Announcements have appeared in t!.e Atlanta and Gainesville pa pers of the approaching marriage of Mr. Jno. III. Hynds, of Gaines ville, to Miss Annie Florence Wil lis, of Ilawkinsville. This happy event'wiil occur on the evening of the 2Gt !i of April, the ceremony- to take place in the Baptist church. Mr. Hynds, the fortunate groom, is one of North Georgia's leading and most prosperous young business gentlemen. He is SecretarJ- of the J. Miss Willis is a most charming young lady, her excellent manners and beautiful person having won for : her a state reputation, while her j popularity at home is unlimited. Adkins had just died at his his home five miles below town. His death was a great surprise to all for he was seen upon the street here in attendance upon court the latter part of last week and he was seemingly well and hearty. Upon investigation we learned that lie was taken violently ill while here Thursday and had two convulsions before reaching home. He continued to grow worse until early yesterday morning when he died. Too much of that kind of business is what has been the in their trial. If all the cases were matter with us. Phil, is a popular young man and his many Vienna frier.ds :e:id best wishes. Rev. Middleton McDonald of Pateville came up Friday on a visit to his sou, Rev. P. G. McDonald, and his many friends here. Mr. McDonald has always been a great friend to the Progress and always has a word of encouragment for its editors. That is not all either. His subscription is already- paid to 1S95. If the Progress had many such friends as he we would Mr. J. S. Willis of Ilawkinsville was a witness in our court last week, and his presence in our town reminds us of a good joke our peo ple got off on him a few weeks ago. Those who indulge in danc-; ing were actively preparing forj the 14th of February hall and par- 1 a oil man his money back. Mr. T. A. Adkins began his du ties as census taker last week. As this enumeration is for distribu tion of the school fund only he takes the names and ages of the children between 6 and 18 years old. He says the heads of the families, though, give the names of all their children from 60 years old down. He has to cull out those of school age. after he gets the full list. The Inaugural procession will be nothing to the procession of beauty and bargains we will show you when our new Spring 6tock arrives. W. C. Willis <fc Cn. What can be done about it? There are dozens of cases before our court that have been put off from term to term for the past two or three years. There are several tedious cases that consume all the time allotted and it looks as if most of the cases on the dockets will never be tried. They can’t be unless more than one week is given to the civil business. Dispatcrhjand News. Miss Willis has many friends in Vienna and Dooly who offer their congratulations in advance. She is a sister of our Mr. W. C. Willis. “A little disfigured but still in i the ring.” I Although we have suffered con siderable loss bv the recent tire we Last week was a busy one with Dooly Superior court. There were many- attorneys, witnesses and liti gants, both at home and abroad who were interested in it and the attendance was consequently large every day. There are a large number of attorney’s who practice in our courts and the Macon, Ilawkinsville, Americus, Montezu ma and Cordele bars were ahly represented. As soon as organized Monday morning both branches of the court went actively to work. Some fifteen or twenty cases were'strick en from the dockets for want of prosecution, withdrawal or settle ment. After dinner Monday the case of McSwain v, s. Beedgood & Royal, complaint for land, was called and both sides announced ready. This case consumed that afternoon, Tuesday and nearly ali the forenoon of Wednesday. The jury gave McSwain a verdict for the land and .>150 damages. It will be appealed. The next case was Jas. L. S. Brown, Administra tor of the Estate of Jas. Brown v. s. E. J. Story, another complaint for land. This consumed the bal ance of Wednesday and an houi- or two Thursday morning. A ver dict was given Brown. For Thurs day had been set the now famous Mayo will ease of J. T. Knight v. s. J. A. Lane. Their work is about over now and they will soon adjourn. The Atlanta Constitution has taken a bold stand for Georgia in the distribution of the public offi ces of the government. It claims that there are 80,000 offices in the gift of the administration and according to the showing made by- Georgia she is entitled to at least 25,000 of these offices. We say if Georgia is entitled to them she ought to have them. Heretofore nearly all the offices have been filled from certain localities in the Eastern States when they shonld have come South. Georgia is possibly the strongest democratic State in the Lrnion. Whatever may be said of her she is by no means a doubtful element when it comes to politics. The people of the whole country know what to expect of her and they are neyer deceived. Thus she demands great recognition in this matter. Let all good citizens join in claiming for our state that just recognition in all matters that she deserve and let us keep her at the top of the ladder in all tilings. There has been a con throng of office seekes at the Cap itol since before the inauguration. I Georgia contributed her quota of j these and many of them have been j successful in their applications j while others are still there push- j ing their claims. Those who have gone there to help their own cause are good men they spent their money-, time and talents in the recent conflict and i deserves good places and wages, and we are proud to note that Mr. j Cleveland is recognizing tho more ; worthy- handsomely.
