The second quarterly meeting of the Dooly County Alliance for this year well be held at the Alli ance Hall in Vienna on Thursday 6* Siovall who was then Mayor of our town ordered an election that the whole town might express choice in tlie matter by their bal lots The election went almost unanimously in favor of bonds. The financial stringency under which this section of country »ias been laboring for some months so depressed the markets that no at tempt has ever been made to float these bonds. These bonds ean now be placed . upon thejnarkets and sold toj ad- : vantage Then, why not bore thc well and build the waterworks? Vienna needs bolh--and needs them badly. Our town is entirely without fire [ protection. Slioula a lire break i out at any time wo can only trust I to providence nnd wait until all j the buildings in reach have burned. There are three frame rows of houses that are more than barely liable to^burn at any time and when one building in any of these rows catch on fire, under the pres ent conditions, they will all burn. This raises the insurance rates to where they are almost prohibitory and makes the insurance com panies look with suspicion on Vi enna. Not only this, but’the ratesof in- 6iirance*are being constantly in- creased’and while they bear very heavily now'they will go still high- ‘ er in the next few months and possibly refuse to carry any except the brick risks. This would-be a calamity that all would regret. Vienna needs the waterworks for fire protection-and needs them badly. Another no less potent reason is. WE NEED THE WATER- It is to be regretted, yet never theless true, that we do not have as good water as we wish. Wc have as good water as any in this section, and possibly better than in some localities, but it is not good pure water after all. Last Friday afternoon we had a very heavy and continuous rain. Saturday morning nearly every well in town was full of a blucish, brackish, milky, surface water, the drinking of which is sure to bring on derangements and disease. It causes constipation and constipa tion brings on fever and fever sends for the doctor and the doc tor makes you pay a hill that would have been avoided if you had good water to drink. The miasmatic atmosphere which we breathe hasVright hand helper'in the bad water we drink. These two cause much of the dull, drowsy, good-for-nothing, sick feeling that we have in the late spring and early fall. With good pure water at our doors^much of this would_be obvi ated. With the difference in Insurance rates, good feeling and doctor’s bills a well and waterworks would pay for themselves in a few years and be an ornament and advertise ment to our town. Let’s have them and spiedily. MLDWAY.TTEMS.
