While loading and switching some cars of lumber at Richwood last week a convict was thrown from the top of a car and severely if not fatally injured. Mr. Sheppard Woods presenting himself a few days ago with a fine- young horse that is hardly grown yet but has spleddid gaits. Heard went down to Drayton Sunday and spent the day with Hon. T. J. Ray and wife. Mr. Heard says the only regret he had was when they- were called in to dinner-Le wished then he had carried his whole family. He says that when his friends get hungry and want to spent a pleasant day’ hereafter he is going to invite them to go to Tom Rays home. The ladies know a good thing when they see it. This is the rea- that Mrs. Morgan and Brown sell them what they need in Millinery- goods. While we feel sure that our readers will all notice it, we desire to call special attention to the ad vertisement of Mess. W. C. Willis & Co., found in this issue. These gentlemen have a great many good things to tell the trad ing public, but nothing more so than now. Miss Nona Duncan returned home from Unadilla Saturday ac companied by’ Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Nichols. A full and interesting session of the Teachers, Institute was held Saturday. This is the last for this year. There is a move quietly being made that will do Vienna much good. The Progress will tell you about it in a week or two. Our Candies are pure. Miss Janie Barlow has been ap pointed Postmaster at Unadilla. Miss Janie is a most estimable and deserving young lady and we congratulate her upon the appoint ment. Elder P. G. McDonald leaves for Alabama to-day for a two weeks preaching tour. Elder Murray cf Butler, Ga., filled his published appointments near here la6t week, and while here constituted a church near Shiloh. The Reading Club will meet at the home of Dr. and Mrs. C. T. Stovall next Monday night. The last meeting was postponed on account of services at the Meth odist church and the program for that meeting will be caaried out at the Monday night meeting. Mr. J. M. Fields purchased a pair of pretty calico ponies last week and now says that he is in the ring and will win If you dont watch out. Judge Z. T. Penny could not be kept idle very long. He tried to content himself, with fishing and swapping tobacco with the boys around town. But it would- not work and be grew more and more restless all the time. Last week he purchased the mercantile busi ness of Mr. J, M. Fields.on Uuion street and now feels better. He will be glad to serve hismanyfriends when in need of any thing in his line. WANTED. Next Saturday and Sunday- our town will be filled with visitors who will attend the Sunday school con vention at the Baptist church. Weknow that Vienna will do her full duty, as she always does, and sustain her well earned reputation for broad hospitality. The services will begin Friday night with preacing by Dr. W. A. Nelson of Hawkinsville. The pro gram for the whole occasion is a very interesting one and will prove of great benifit to all who attend. Neighborhood Fish Fry. Our teacher gave us vacation last Friday that we might attend the picnic at the Camp ground. Several of our young people at tended the Line creek picnic last Saturday-. Some of our boys and girls went fishing not long since and caught four? Wonder when they expect to try their luck again? Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Mason vis ited Mrs. Mason’6 mother near Macon last week. Crops are not looking so well r.s they did a week ago, owing to the unfavorable weather. Mess. Brown, Barnes and West brook, of Montezuma, were down here on a business trip and fishing frolic this week. Two of Vienna’s young men was enjoyed. These friendly, neighborhood gatherings are alway’6 enjoyable. Children’s Day. Last Sunday- was observed by- all churches of the South Georgia Conference as “Childrens, Day-,” In ail the churches and Sunday schools the exercises were render ed by and for the children. This was very fittingly done by the Vi enna Methodist church. A pro gram of songs and recitations had been arranged and were well ren dered by’the school, by classes and by individuals. Those by- the misses and young ladies were ex ceptionally good. The occasion was happily and profitably spent to the great pleasure of of all who attended. Mt. Ransom of Richwood was in town Thursday with both hands in a sling. A few days be fore he had been at work upon the machinery in the mills there and had just started to take off a saw to do some work on it when the machinery started up without any warning to him and the saw cut off the ends of his two middle fin gers on each hand. It is a seri ous and painful wound and will prevent his doing any work for a long time. We take especial pleasure in calling attention to the advertise ment of the Blue Drug Store, contained in this issue. Waters has moved to Drayton and is now bridge keeper. Our Sunday School is still booming. Mr. W. E. Smith is building a house for himself and from all accounts will soon cage his bird. And gather the gems for her, all the pure ones, all the bright ones, her love and your own; like the stars of the morning, her bright crown adorning, they shall shine in their beauty, bright gem for you. The fascinating young ladies from Montezuma who spent a few days in our town last week have returned home and our three old “bach” friends have sunk deeper than ever into the slough of de spond. One of {hem was heard to beseech one of the fair ones to “pity- the loneliness of a poor old “bach” whose aching heart seeks comfort,” but we are afraid he was plunged deeper than ever into “innocuous desuetude.” If Billy was just a single man- well ! Miss Mattie Murray, of Sumter county is visiting her sister, Mrs. J. S. Morgan. Miss Mattie is in deed a sweet young lady and 1 think some of our boys will sanc tion this sentiment with a hearty’, Amen! Dr. W. S. Howell and Mr. S. M.
