T\\e Vienna Progress J. E. Howell, Editor. 91.00 PER AXXIM. TUESDAY, AUGUST 22. Georgia’s eleven congressmen constitute the most conspicuous delegation in the house. Why couldn’t the other bunks of the country do likewise? Wcife not making a nomina- 1 ion, but we would be pleased to see Speaker Crisp representing Ga. in t lie United States senate. Hon. J. IP Blount would make a most excellent governor.—Houston Home Journal. And heie’s another. A Fellow in Smithvillc who could’t spare $2 a year for a news paper sent fifty two-cent stamps to a down-east ywnkee to know how to raise beets. He got an answer “take hold of the tops and pull Tor till you are worth."—Savannah News, The Albany Herald is growing Cautious. As an evidence, this: A woman who had been a bride but two months procured a divorce • in Superior. Wis., the other clay because her hubby refused to scratch her back. It’s getting to be so a married man—well, we can’t be too particular and obedi ent; levy an income tax upon the ill- gotten gains of our one per cent, of millionaires; stop protection to the rich and depression to the poor; rerise the tarilF, that what money we make stay in our pock ets. Take off the tax on State’s money and let us have a flexible money that the grabbers of Wall street may not corner on. Let the congress elected by the masses say to the few who would crush the hard earnings from the toilers hands at whatever sacrifice of right, that the people shall rule and will not be crushed ! And all will be well. Let these measures, so oft prom ised the people, be put into effect and they will be content. And we see no need to take soj long to argue and display speech- making pyrotechnics over it. The people want relief, have been prom ised it and demand it NOW. Local Board Officers. W. II Wnipri.E, President. U. V. Whipple, Attorney. W. C. Willis, Sect'y and Trcas J. A. Murphy, ) L. A. Morgan, $ Mem. of Board Vienna Ga. Petition For Charter. W. A. Davis & C o. The Alliance Cc-operative Co- Unadilla, Ga. —COTTON FACTORS — Nos. 405 and 407 Poplar Street, MACON, 3A. With increased facilities for handling the staple, we again offer our services to the planters of this section, and solicit the continued pa tronage of our friends. We keep fully abreast with the times, and the improved methods of handling cotton, and from our great experience in the business, we flatter ourselves that we can make it to your interest to patronize us. We handle all cotton at the low price of fifty cents per bale. We work for the interest of our customers, and it is always gratify ing to please them. W. A. DAVIS & CO. Macgn, Ga. cf The baiiks of Atlanta Have de eided to issue clearing house cer tificates, if necessary, to have money with which to move the cot ton crop. A large number of At lanta’s merchants have agreed to accept these clearing house cer tificates the same as money, from their customers. Capt. “Tip” Harrison, of the ex ecutive department, who is in charge of Georgia’s pension bureau is quoted as sayiiig that “Georgia has clone more for the relief of her disabled veteran soldiers than all the other Southern states com bined.” Tip is an old vet himself, and has a big place in a big heart for the old soldiers.—Columbus Enquirer-Sun. Not The Platform, Hon. Seaborn Wright of Home, Ga., in writing of the President’s message among other things has this to say. “The financial policy of the Re- j>u dican party in a quarter of a century has concent rated more than half the wealth of the country in the hands of one per cent of the people. It has concentrated al most the entire money wealth in a few great centers North and East. The laboring people from Maine to California are practically without money. In the South and West all the people, rich and poor alike, have not enough money to meet the common expenses of life. A few banks in New York absolute^’con trol the country. If the people protest against any of their exor bitant demands the money supply is cut off, business paralyzed and the vist laboring masses thrown out of employment. “This state of thing I sny has been brought about by the finan cial policy of the Republican party. Every democratic platform since the war has condemend it. The people slow to anger, at last rose up in great revolt—turned at the plunderers and thieves and gave full power to the democratic party to redress their wrongs. The nomination of Mr. Cleveland was against the solemn protest of in numerable democrats—but when he accepted the nomination upon a platform, pregnant with relief for the people—with no word of dissent to any plank it contained —one by one opposing democrats fell into line, and supported him. His first official act is to repudi ate tlie most vital principle of the platform.” A Better Price For Cotton. Rhodes Danforth Free. Govci'norNorthern has pardoned Rhodes Danforth who was under a life sentence in the penitentiary. It will be remembered that about eight 3 ears ago Rhodes Danforth was clerking in the store of Win, Landsberg and supporting a moth er and sister upon his meager sal ary. He went to his employer and asked for a raise in wages as he was not receiving enough to sup port his mother and sister. Lands berg replied by insinuating that his mother and sister might sup- support themselves if they would. This insinuation so maddened Danforth that he went off, secured a gun and returning shot Lands berg, dead. For this he was sen tenced to the penitentiary for life. Recently a petition containing 5,000 names was presented to Gov. Northern asking for his pardon, which he granted. Danforth was in the Richvvood camp in this county and has al ways had the confidence of his keepers. He really has not suffer ed man}’ of the hard-ships of a convict life. Sep- We believe that our readers will agree with us that the panaeaj for all the financial ills that beset this section is a just compensation for our cotton crop. What would our people care for the much talked of “confidence,” tariff, income tax, State bank tax or the free coinage of silver if they could realize a fair price for the present crop of cot ton ? The all-absorbing question, then is how to get a fair price for our products? A serious condition of affairs confront us. Two-thirds of the cotton mills of the United States are standing idle and claim to have a large amount of cotton goods oh hand for which the}' can find no sale. In addition they say that owing to the stringency of money they can borrow none with which to continue business until the demand is better. .The demand for the present crop ’^'ilien, must come, under the present condition ofaffairs, from England. And here is another trouble. All our monied arrangements with England must be made through New York and the banks of this city refuse to ship the mi n -y from 1 heir banks and we would liaye to wait until the money could be shipped from England to the in terior of this coimtT} - This indeed, seems to be starva tion i-i the midst of plenty, fort.m . From Drayton. Road working in session, tember court coming. Lots of cotton is open but the farmers are tardy about picking it out, owing to the lack of demand and low price. Us and our folks are not pleased with t ie President’s message and the action of congress. We ex pected an express car loaded with free silver, and it ought to come, let Mr. Cleveland say what he will. We need more money and we must have it—and will have it if the congressmen do what we sent them there to do. And if they don’t, its “good bye John,” with them. Nearly all of our people attend ed Dooly campmeeting during the whole time and report a meeting full of good results and pleasure. Misses Bessie Williams and Sal- lie Myrick of Valdosta have been spending several days in our town They are now visiting down at Coney, from whence they will go over into Sumter. Tnese are charming young laities and make scores of friends wherc’r they go. We were glad to read the La- Crosse letter last week, but it seems that the correspondent tried to slur Billy and our Doctor. We will say just here that the bodies referred to were found entirely out of our Doctor’s range and Bill}’ the Kid may be a “William Goat” but lie’s not the one that Mary nursed, Billy the Kid. PINEHURST DOTS- Rain, Rain, Rain. Mr. Ben F. Watson took unto himself a wife Sunday was a week ago in the person of 31 rs. O. Churchwell. One of the negro laborers of Mr. J. G. Ludlam was killed by another negro Wednesday night. One of the marriages that were to take place in our town soon will be postponed. For what reason I am not allowed to say. That same fellow was here again Sunday night but he went to Ma con Monday and I haven’t seen him since. A certain young man did not get back from campmeeting until Monday morning, nevertheless he got wet Sunday night. Mess. 'J. J. Cooper and R. M. Fullington attended the Williams marriage at Tuesday. Protracted services will begin at the Methodist church here on Fri day before the 4th Sunday inst. A‘ev. J, C. Parker will be in charge of the meeting.
