J. P. Heard & Co. Let’s go to work and bore that artesian well and quit fooling about it. The best brands of Smoking and Chewing goods. Powell Bros, Miss lone Lewis of Montezuma is the guest of her cousin, Miss Mamie Leonard of our town. Our stock is now complete and we can interest you in low prices. J. P. Heard & Co. It was very hot during the middle of the day last week but cool in the early morning. Attend Taylor’s closing out sale this week. Everything at a sacri fice. The subject of a county chain- gang to work our public roads is still being agitated. The many friends of Mr. F. J. Lewis who moved from Dooly to Floral City, Fla, a year or two ago, were delighted to see him upon our streets since Wednesday. The people have found that Powell Bros, are Headquarters for Groceries and they are kept busy serving their customers. The Arabi Institute opened with 75 pupils in attendance with the prospect of an hundred in a few weeks. Many boarding pupils are'of an incindiary. in attendane j and more are expec ted. Col. L. J. Blalock of Americus, one of the leading attorneys in the South Western circuit acted as j Solicitor pro tern for the court in the absence of Solicitor Hudson and was kept exceedingly busy all the week. Carry your horse to B. P. How ell <fc Co’s stables near the jail when in Vienna, where it will be given proper attention. Mr. B. F. We are sel ling it 10% less than anyone on the market. J. P. Heard & Co. The great question before the country to-day is, what will con gress do? It looks now very much ,as if they ate going to do nothing. . Do you know- that Taylor is closing out and you can get goods at your own figures? Go around and see what he lias that you need. We are due many thanks to Mr. W F. Webb of Byromvillc for a Make our Store headquarters during court, examine our goods, get prices, see what we pay for cotton and be convinced that we are the people to patronize because we treat you right and save yon money. J. P. Heard & C'o. Our southern newspapers are urging our people to patronize home industries more liberally. Our people should encourage home manufactories by buying their products. Our section will never prosper so long as we buy what we eat and wear from other sections. There are lots of goods at Tay lor's, Canned Goods, Groceries, Tobacco, Cigars, Crockery, Glass ware, Tinware, Hardware and Fur niture that is selling at a great sacrifice to close out this week. See them. Mr. M. McCormick, said to be one of the best section bosses on the G. S. <fc F. It. R. has been mov ed by the Railroad authorities to Sparks. Mi. McCormick has been a cit izen of Vienna nearly ever since the R. R. has been built, he and his family stand high in the es teem of our people. All of whom regret very much to see them move 3Ir. McCormick had his section of road here in line fix And they- moved him to Sparks to put in or der some bad places ot road down there. The Progress vast very much gratified at the chtrgi delivered to the grand jury last week by Judge Fish on the subjectof Sunday dos ing. While we try " not to be •‘cranks’ 1 on any sibject, yet we deeply- delore the fact that many laws upon our statutes are of no effect because flagrantly violated and the perpetrators of these par ticular crimes are never molested. It is to be regrelted that the kind of immigration we have al lowed to come into America has no respect for many of our laws, es pecially that of Sunday closing. B. P. HOWELL. W. B. MORGAN B. P. Interest in the question of the removal of Macon county’s court house from Oglethorpe to Monte zuma, which will be voted on on the 23rd inst., is red hot. Ru mors of bribery, drunkenness and all manner of corruption are fill ing the county. A Convention of the populist Governors has been called to meet at Chicago to consider a movement having for its object the division of this republic. Such meetings as tnis caused this country a bloody war about thirty years ago. Wonder if these populist Gover nors are growing bloodthirsty? If you want a good dinner come and try our canned goods Sardines, Oysters, Potted Ham, Deviled Ham, Pig’s Feet, Salmon, Mackerel, and Roast Beef, Pickle, etc. Anything you want Powell Bros. Our stock is going out and com ing in every day. which keeps it fresh. Give us your trade. Powell Bros. Miss Lillie Ray, daughter of IIon. T. J. Raj - of Drayton left Tuesday for Milledgevillc to at tend the Georgia Normal Indus trial College. We are prepared to properly .care for your stock. Bring them to our stable near the jail. B. P. ByGrder of Council. This Sept. jStii, 1893, J. J. Stovall. Clerk of Council. Our editor was taken sick Tuesday night but in in aged to stay up until Friday when he had to go to bed. Consequently all items for the paper for this week were written upon his sick bed while the “devil” had full possession of the office. The Grand Juroy had a very hard weeks work last week. Hon T. J. Ray its able Foreman is nothing if not a thorougly practi cal, g > a head business man and the Jury being composed of able men of affairs, they are hard at work at (ill times and are doing a great deal of good. Tuesday Vienna weighed cotton from Pulaski and Wilcox counties and has repeated the act nearly every day since. Vienna’s cotton market is taking the lead over all others. Our warehousemen are working hard to secure the top of the market for every bale and our merchants are selling goods cheap. Mr. G- R. Mathews has not been able to find any trace what ever as to the whereabouts of Ike Jackson, the negro boy that en tered his bedroom where he and his wife were sleeping a few nights ago and purloined Mrs. Mathews gold watch $23 in money and a 38 calibre Smith and Wesson pis tol. The ladies spread excellent din ner at the millinery store of Mrs- C V. Morgan last week which were liberally patronized and highly complimented by their many friends. We took a few notes day by day. The editor was sick and could not do justice to the fried chicken. Jesse Horn was after the custard again, Tom Ray finally had to unbotton his vest. The ladies were always disappoint ed at the effect of their dinner on Reason Whitehead, John T. Brown and Will Byrom. These three could clean up a whole side of the table and still look hungry. Shell Lasseter made a great row at what others ate just to divert attention from himself. The Annual Session of the Hous ton Baptist Association will con vene with the first Baptist Church at Cordele on Thursdaj’ before the 2nd Sunday in Oct. Some confus ion has arisen as to whether this meeting would be held on the 5th or the 12th day of Oct. We here by announce upon authority that the cori-cT&^ate is Oct. 5th. Delegates to' 1 Association will greatly aid the committee on entertainment by sending in their names to Mr. B. F. Superior Cclirt. ::: I was ment nish- mble. same up a ious and the tely Still say of our Proves Citizenship and Quits. Some of his brother attorneys are telling a good joke on Solicitor Thomson of the county court. Much of the criminal business that comes before this court is sent up from Cordele. The Solicitor has been so uniformly successful in convicting these cases from Cor dele that thev tell it on him now that he reads his accusation to the court and introducing his first witness says, ‘•What is your name”? “John Jones, sir.” “Do vou know this defendant, Bill Blink”? “Yas-ser ” “Where does he live”? “In Cordele, sir.” [Addressing the court.] “Your llonoj, I close the case for the State, and ask for conviction.” They -say that all lie cares to prove is that the defendant is a citizen of Cordele. Willis <fc Co, Everybody in Dooly that is at all familiar with the generality of the people knows Mr. S. P. Odom. Those who are acquainted with church affairs know that he has been Clerk of the Houston Associ ation for a quarter of a century and those who have served with him on the grand jury know that Mr. Odom is always made Clerk, and all this from the fact that a better one could not be found any where. Being tne clerk of these two bodies every time he meets with them caused him to niaice quite a laughable mistake the oth er day. The other members of the jury had all made their big speeches. There came a lull and Mr. Odom who had been itching to have his say, arose. His pencil was held aloft in his right hand while his left carefully, thoughtfully re moved his spectacles and lie said “Brother Moderator and breth ren”—Everybody laughed of course, which he could not under stand and he began to grow con fused. When some one explained to him the cause of the merriment he collapsed and can't be persuad ed to sav a word since. On Thursday night at Unndilla Miss Emma Whiteside was married to Air. Charles C. Graham. M iss Whiteside has been in Una- dilla for some months and has won for herself by- her many graces the highest esteem of all her people. Mr. Graham is a son of Judge John T. Graham and by his manly traits of character bids fair to be as highly esteemed by the people of Dooly as his popular father. A very elaborate dining was given Charlie and his bride the next day by his parents which was enjoyed in the highest degree by a large number of friends who were profuse in their congratulations to the young and happy pair. At the close of the service at the Pinehurst Baptist church on Sunday night last Rev. G. T. Jen nings led Miss Minnie Sheffield to the alter and Rev. J. J. Hyman, in his impressive way, joined them together as man and wile, before the congregation. Mr. Jennings is a young Baptist minister in charge of the churches iiai Uyromviile, Alt.
