Explanation Needed,
The Atlanta Herald grows
brighter and better every day.
1 With all the most approved
conveniences to do its work and
■uch an original newspaper genius
as Josiah Carter to manage it, it
went into the field to win and is
reaping great and deserving suc
cess. Lately jt has secured
another great feature in Col. J.
Armory Knox, founder of theTex-
.•* Siftings, as general manager
and associate editor of the Herald.
This combination guarantees to
the Herald wide popularity and
continued great success and power.
A Stork as a watchdog.
Your
House,
W. N. Harman, of Tennille, has
a number of pets, among which is
h domesticated crane or stork.
Th is crane acts in the capacity of
a watchdog and never fails to give
notice of the approach of a stran
ger—man or animal — and if any
body enters the yard is sure to
meet him before he can reach the
house. The crane is an excellent
jnouser andean destroy these pests
with remarkable rapidity when
taken to the barn. If he sees u
mouse, ho is almost sure to get
iiim. Ho is perfectly gentle and
will come in response to a call
from his owner.—Savannah News
Champion Gounl.
We not only have gold, iron as
bestos and diamonds, in White
county, but we come forward now
with the champion gourd. It
rneasur s 5 feet and 11 inches in
diumeter now, and Mr. J. H. Free
man on whose place it is growing,
challenges the county far and wide
to beat it The gourd is not grown
yet, and may be seen on its vine
at the residence of Mr. Freeman.

A Selfish World.
“No matter how things, the poor
#1 ways sutler,” said a man to a
New York Weekly writer.
“Yes, the nabobs who own rail
roads don’t think anytliingof run
ning over a poor man’s horse.”
“Yes, and the man who can
afford to own a horse runs down
the poor fellow on a bicycle.
“Just so. And the fellow on
the bicycle runs clown the poor
chap who has to walk.”
“That’s it. And the man who
walks stumbles against the poor
cripple who goes on crutches.”
“That’s the way. And the crip
ple ou crutches spends most of his
time jamming his sticks down on
other people’s corn. It’s a sacily
selfish world.
Superior Court,
Our columns were so badly
crowded last week that we could
not even give a brief synopsis of
the w >rk done by our late term of
Superior court and while the ac-
counCwe give below is a week late
we trust that it will be of interest
to our readers.
The number of civil cases set
tled during the term was 69. New
cases brought to September term
75, Old cases still untried 119.
Making 194 cases on the docket
for trial next March term.

In the recent contest in Macon
county between Oglethorpe and
Montezuma over the removal of
the Court house to Montezuma a
total of nearly 3,000 was polled.
Now the census takers must have
made an unpardonable mistake:
the elections held heretofore were
very tame for the census gives
Macon county less than half this
many votes, nor have they ever
been polled in an) - of the previous
elections. Montezuma alone
polled as many votes as is usually
credited to the whole county!
Where did so many votes come
from?
A Wholesale Hanging.
Five negroes were hung over at
Mt Vernhn last Friday. Three
for the murder of Agent Peterson
at Ailey a few weeks ago, the other
two for murdering other negroes
some time ago. it is a terrible
thing to see one human being
launched into eternity but the
hanging of five shoid be a warning
to be well heeded and will doubt
less do much to stem the tide of
crime in that section. A few
more hangings in other counties
would doubtless have a wholesome
