A Handsome Present.
Rev. J. J. II}'mnn, pastor at Ar-
*»bi, is much'beloved by his people.
As an evidence of their great love
for him the “Willing Workers,” a
band of about 20 little girls, of the
Arabi church made him a present
of a handsome hible a few nights
ago. On Tuesday night of last
week Rev. Mr. H}'nian gave a talk
during the regular prayer service
to the parents and children pres
ent. At the close of the service
Miss Wilna George arose and said,
"Mu, Hyman:
I represent the ‘Willing Work
ers’ of Arabi Baptist church,
which is composed of the little
girls of your congregation.”
“As a faint evidence of our re
gard for you as pastor of the
church and as a token of our re
spect for the people you represent,
allow me to present 3’ou with this
Bible. Accept it at the hands of
your little friends, place it upon
your pulpit and glean from its
sacred pages those precious truths
that will edify your church and
guide us little ones in the road
that lead to the fountain of ever
lasting life.”
“We also thank each and every
one who aided us in securing this
present for tile church and pastor ”
Mr. Hyman replied in a few well
chosen remarks.
Quite a Wreck.
The North bound passenger
train on the Georgia Southern
railroad was wrecked near Dakota jin these United States within
, on Sunday' last. The first and
second class passenger conches left j only 160 were in the South,
the track and turned about half
over in the woods to the right of
the track; the mail and express
conches went over on their sides
to the left; the tender turned
square across the track and re
fused to go either way. Several
passengers were severely bruised,
of course all were badly shaken up,
but none were seriously hurt. The
engine was not damaged at all
and the tender pulled back on the
track. The other coaches all
cleared the track and after a few
a few hours delay in getting an
other train there the passengers,
express, mail and baggage were all
transfered and carried in to Mu-
con.
The wreck occurred at the 82
mile post where an orange train
was torn all to pieces last fall and
It is thought was due to a defect
ive frog in a side track at that
place.

Where Does the South Standi
In this great fight in congress
over the repeal of the purchasing
clause of the Sherman silver law
where does the South stand?
The fight in Congress is really
not over the merits of the measure
but is distinctly a fight between
the silver miners of the West and
the goldbugs of the East. The
Western silver miner wants free
coinage because it will benefit his
business, which otherwise will not
be near so valuable. The Eastern
gold-bug is fighting it because the
disuse of silver would increase the
purchasing power of gold and eon
sequertly increase the value of
their holdings, also, if the gov
ernment does not have silver to
fall back on the treasury could be
so dreaned as to force the govern
ment to issue bonds. It would be
much easier, too, to contract the
currency' and cause such financial
panics as we had at the opening
of the present cotton season, there
by reaping rich revenue through
jobbers who charge large premi
ums for money shipments, and
who are agents of the banks.
But in either event where would
the South’s share of the benefits
come in?
We have no silver mines to be
increased in value. We have no
great money combinations to he
benefitted.
We stand in this fight between
the West and East like the negro
in local politics, the balunce of
power, to be fought over. Free
silver would not benefit us, unless
in the increase of the circulating
medium ; the single gold standard
would not benefit us, unless the
small per cent, of capitalists in
the cities. What we want is a
better price for our money’ crop,—
cotton—a reduction of the pension
and tariff rolls, that we may be
enabled to keep the money in our
pockets to buy necessaries, after
we have earned it by our labor;
an income tax that those who own
the great bulk of property may
pay tlie larger per cent, of the ex
penses of the government; the tax
on the issue of State banks re
moved, that our currency may' be
inflated or contracted, as our needs
demand. Give us these and we
care naught about the sectional
fight now going on between the
East and West.
We have always loved and hon
ored the South. It was born in us
to revere her heroes, have respect
for her traditions and memories
and love her illustrious sires. But
our love has been intensified, our
honor heightened in the very re
cent past. Statistics show that
several hundred banks have failed
the
past year Of this great number
Not
only’ are our financial institutions
conservative and safe but recently
when the hanks North determined
to force us to wall or make us pay
large premiums for money with
which to move our cotton crop;
our people determined to be inde
pendent and show to those who
would oppress us that we were in
possession of vast resources; made
local certificates of deposit for cir
culation instead of paper money,
gold and silver and our business
men of uU classes took them as
freely as gold and business rushed
on heedless of the money corner in
the North. This caused us to be
come prouder than ever of our
fair South-land.
Some claim that the repeal of
the Sherman law broke the money
dead-lock and caused it to flow in
any quantity to this section? They
forget that the Sherman law has
not been repealed and though the
