A Fine Rainy Day Game. “Hoop and ball” is a very pretty littl. game in which both hoops and balls are used, but the balls are not thrown to be caught, and the hoops are not rolled. You get six wooden hoops, all of different sizes, such as will measure from twelve to thirty in ches across. Fasten on each a lit tle screw-hook to hang it up by Next prepare a place to suspend the hoops. That may be a stou! wire fixed across the playroom about seven feet from the floor, or you can put up your wires across the attic between rafters, at the same height, or in the barn. Or, if you wish to piay out of doors, you can have the wires Notice to Debtors and Creditors. All persons having demands against the estate of W. O. Every living man should be a perfect pattern of uprightness and morality, for some boy to imitate. The main reason why boys are bud is because their) fathers are not good. The bad examples set by men has more to do with wreck ing the lives of boys than any mis chief that they are otherwise cap able of conceiving. If you don’t want the boys to swear, don’t swear yourself. It you don’t want them to drink, you had better not do so. If you want the boys to make worthy, honorable men, be one yourself and you will live to see the desire of your heart in regard ito them. They are naturally bad •enough without men helping them to be worse. Let all of our men live right and we need not fear for the boys,—Fort Valley Leader. Mr. Richard T- Smith, Dead- On Wednesday last, the lltli inst., Mr. R. T. Smith went from his home down on Gum creek to one of his plantations above Vienna a few miles on business He felt badly when lie left home and continued to grow worse dur ing the day. In the afternoon lie came to Vienna on his return home and decided to slop at the home of his kinsman, Mr. C. H. Everett, and rest awhile. While there lie was taken with a hard chill and became unconscious. Physicians were hurriedly summoned. They at once pronounced his sickness a ni06t malignant type of hemorrhag ic fever and taking his age and previous ill health into considera tion thought his recovery doubt ful. His family were notified and came at once. Ail that physicians, family- and friends could do to releive him of pain and suffering and bring him back to consciousness was done but he lay in a stupified uncon scious condition until 12 o’clock Sunday- night when his spirit fled from this earthly habitation to the realms beyond. Mr. Smith was an old. promi nent and wealth}' citizen of Dooly- much liked by every one for his kind neighborly disposition and Christian character. And though he had become somewhat embar rassed of late years through the perfidy of those to whom he had loaned his credit, he never com plained. He was indeed a good citizen, neighbor and triend and tlie loss his faithful, good compan ion and children is one that none can realize unless similarly situa ted. The Progress joins many friends in offering sincerest sym pathy. A New Remedy For Rats, A citizen of our town who beg ged us to not divulge his name told us the other day of an original and easy way that he used to run all the rats from the place. He said they had been greatly troubled with rats for some time and he determined to try a remedy that he had once heard and see if he could get rid of them. So he bor rowed a trap one day and baited it up nicely for that night. Before they had finished supper one big old fellow had slipped into the trap and was helping himself to the bait. He took the trap out to the lot and lighting some shuchs held the trap over the blaze and singed the rat good all over. He then turned him loose in the crib. He hadn’t got under the shucks, corn and fodder good before the rats of all sizes began to run out, squealing as if something had 'them. They went out by droves -aud be has Dot seen nor heard a On Thursday afternoon last at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. M. Wood one of the happiest mar riages of the season occurred. A number of friends and rela tives of the bride and groom were present and promptly at 3 :30 p. m., Mr. Ed L. Lasseter, the groom, appeared and was ushered into the presence of the waiting bride, Miss Lou A. Brown, and they marched to the parlor into the presence of the waiting well-wishers assembled. Rev. C. H. Branch rose and im pressively read the ceremony of the Methodist church, solemly pronouncing them man and wife. Congratulations and good wishes poured upon them from all present, for they are both very popular in Vienna and have hosts of friends who wish them all the wedded bliss possible in a long life bereft of trouble and tilled with joy. With whom the Progress joins most heartily. Mr. Lasseter is a young busi ness man of much popularity pos sessing many Christian and moral qualities for which he is honored and esteemed. lie is the eldest son of Mr. I. S. Lasseter, well known throughout the county. Miss Brown is from one of Dooly’s oldest and best families, daughter of Mr. Thomas W. Brown so long a citizen at Drayton. She is admired very much ill Vienna, anil everywhere she is known. Everybody pronounces the match a good one. The writer had the pleasure of spending a few hours in prosperous, pleasant Unadilla, Friday after noon where numbers of our sub scribers were found anxious to re new their subscriptions and pay other little bills due us, making our heart glad and pocket heavier. Al ter such a supper as is never for gotten by one who stops over at the popular Johnson house once we were in a frame of mind do en joy anything and went over to the .school concert at Hook’s hail. Had we been in any other mood than a pleasant one we could not have continued so long for pres ently such sweet strains of music greeted us as woulci have enchan ted a very barbarian. Miss Zeph Pate upon the piano, Prof. James Pate of Cordele upon the cornet and Prof. Fraser upon the violin, all masters of the science and skill ful and artistic in the practice brought forth the sweetest notes from each instrument. When the curtain rose there sat a minstrel troupe of as loud mouthed, wooly-headed imperson ators of negro character as you will find. The audience found tiiei: risibles mastering them and io keep from appearing boisterous they tried to suppress them, re sulting in considerable snickering ami littering. But when Tambo, Mr. 31. R. Boren, and Bones, Mr. W. W. Barlow, began to get in their work as end-men the audi ence found that were unable to longer contain themselves and broke into a perfect roar that was kept up during the whole evening. Mess. Cawley, Beaman, Willing ham, Pate and Gutts of Cordele very kindly gave their services and talents to the success of the con cert, as did Col. Joe Jeter of Elko and 31r. M, R. Boren of Abbeville. These gentlemen, all, contributed much to the success and pleasure of the evening. A considerable sum was realized for the benefit of the school at that place and those who attended got more fun for a quarter than they ever did before and were loath to leave the scene of so much en joyment. Subscribers, we are always sad when we sing. So, if in coming to town you meet the melodious strains of our voice out of the road anywhere, you may know that we are sorrowful. Nothing but the c.iink of demonetized silver will quiet us, so take pity on us and come and minister to us. that you may wax fat and multiply, and replenish the face of the earth.— Cleveland Progress.
