TUESDAY NOVEMBER 7
For the Farmer’s Boys.
ashington, D. C. Oct. 20th, ’93.
Dear Proyress:
Some time ago Secretary Hoke
• Smith conceived the very sensible
idea of offering a position as mes
senger to the son of a farmer in
each Congressional District of
Georgia. This offer was made as
a special courtesy to the agricul
tural classes—a special recogni
tion of that class of people who are
so largely affected by the policy of
. public officials and who get so few
'of the offices.
It was a close shave to spare to
( Georgia these special messengers’
places in addition to those previ
ously given the state, it tended to
aggravate the charge, already fre
quently made, that Georgia was
getting an overplus of plums from
the Interior Department; but Sec
retary Smith considered the action
in this case peculiarly justified by
the 70,000 Democratic majority in
the last election which the farm
ers of Georgia aided so materially
in giving.
The places given these farmer
. boys pay them $60 per month each.
They are kept busy seven hours a
day. They have an opportunity of
going to school at night to the
best teachers the country affords.
They can get any kind of an edu
cation they want—common school
classical, literary, scientific or pro
fessional.
Besides making money in the
four years they will be in Wash
ington, they will go back to their
people weH educated men, well pre
pared to make their mark in any
line of work which they may
choose.
These farmer boy messengers
were naturally selected by the
Congressmen from the several dis
tricts. The one selected by Judge
Lester, of the First District, has
not jet arrived in Washington.
Congressman Ben Russell, of
the Second District, selected James
T. Prevatt, a son of A. F. Prevatt,
one of the leading farmers of
Thomas Connty. Young Prevatt
is just twenty one, tall and 'fairly
slender, with a pretty young mus
tache and an earnest look that at
once commends him. He already
has a fair education, gotten at the
South Georgia Agricultural Col
lege. He will enter here the
Georgetown University Law
School.
The representative of the Third
District, selected by Speaker Crisp,
is William H. Liggin, a son of K.
H Liggin, one of the leading
farmers and Democrats of the
county of Dooly. Mr. Liggin is
seventeen j'ears old, but is a bright
capable-looking fellow, who might
be taken to be several years older.
He had hardly settled in Wash
ington before he commenced at
tending one of the leading busi
ness colleges of the city, and in
the classes of that college he is
now doing excellent work.
Ramsey-Williams, a j-oung fel
low of nearly twenty who might be
taken for sixteen was wisely chosen
by Congressman Moses, of the
Fourth District. He was educa
ted at the Southern Shorthand
Business College in Atlanta, is a
good stenographer and in every
way a bright young feliow. He is
now attending the city High
School. He is the son of Hon. B,
H. Williams, of Harris County, who
has several times represented that
county and district in the Georgia
legislature and state senate.
Col. Livingston's reprersentatiev
from the 5th district has not yet
arrived in Washington, but will
be here in a few days.
John P. Blackmon, of Bibb
County, was selected by Captain
Cabaniss, of the 6th District. He
is 19, and has the dignity and air
of determination of a young man
of 22. He is a 6on af Henry V.
Napier, a well known Bibb County
farmer. By the aid of the Super
ior Court he takes his mother’s
maiden name of Blackmon, there
being no boys in the Napier-family.
He .'was " educated at • the
Gresham High school in
Macon, He is now reading law
under a well known Washington
lawyer and will next year begin a
special course at the Georgetown'
Law School. .. -
Thomas N. Adams of Chattooga
County, comes from Judge Maddox
District, the hard fought 7th. He
is a bright, boyish-faced young
fellow, 17 yeras old, larger than
his age would indicate, arid deter
mined, if appearances indicate
anything, to do much to benefit
the good people of Chattooga
County when he shall have had
enough of Washington. He is
now putting in good work at night
in the Washington Grammar
School.
John R. Hudson, Jr., the small
est and youngest cf the boy mes
sengers, comes from thr 8th, Judge
^Lawson’s District. He is a son of
M. R. Hudson and a grandson of
John R. Hudson, and is one of the
best representatives of Young
America that ever came from the
good county of Putnam. He is 15
years old, but has received a fairly
good education from the Eatonton
Male and Female Academy, and is
now taking a special course at the
Columbian University.
Representative Tute of the 9th
District chose Mr. A. N. Coffey,
one of the most influential citizens
of the county of Towns, to repre
sent the good farmers of his dis
trict in this classification. Mr.
Coffey is a well known Demoerai
