TUESDAY NOVEMBER 34
This is the time of year when
the three -‘mV’ come into promi
nence-mortgage, mule, misery.—
Boston World.
It is said the treasury of the
Columbian Exposition Company
contained $2,000,000 in profits
when the World’s Fair closed
Tuesday evening.
He who does not advertise is like
a fellow riding a rail across a creek.
He does not want to get off nor
does he want to 6tay on, so he just
grins and endures it.
He who does not advertise is

Some years ago De Toqueville,
the distinguished French publicist
was commissioned by his country
to visit America for the purpose
of studying the genius of our in
stitutions. In reporting to the
French senate he said: “I went at
your bidding and passed along
their thoroughfares of trade. I
ascended the mountains and went
down their valleys; I visited their
manufactories, their commercial
markets and emporiums of trade,
I entered their judicial courts and
legislative halls; but 1 sought
everywhere in vain until I entered
the church. It was there, as I
listened to the soul qualifying and
soul elevating principals of the
gospel of Christ, as they fell from
Sabbath to Subbath upon the
masses of the people, that I learned
why America was great and free,
an.d why France was a slave.”

A young lady living not far from

YE EDITOR.
“My dear reader have you ever
stopped to think when you are
criticizing the editor that he is a
man in some instances like other
people. He usually tries to do his
best, yet his ways may not be your
ways. He respects his friends, ap
preciates your kindness and a good
word. You have always found
him ready to return a favor often
times returning good for evil. He
will not always continue to pat a
man on the back and proclaim
what a good and prominent citi
zen he is, how much he has done
for the people about him. lie
does not feel like puffing a man
who is snarling and biting at his
paper every chance he gets. You
will always gee him stand by a
man who stands by him. You will
see the man who always hangs
back and never makes a start for
himself kick when the editor, in
the good-fellowship feeling, puffs
some fellow who has been working
for the good of the people around
about him. Have you ever thought
what a rumpus there would be if
' the paper should always contain
the feelings of the editor, or if he
should criticise as he is criticised.
A newspaper man is a little dif
ferent from other men ; his busi
ness makes him so. He mdkes it
his study to say all the good
things he can about those around
him and to say as few of the bad
things as he can. If you don’t
get the puffs you think you should
have come in and tell the editor
about it, and you will find him
ever willing to proclaim to the
world your good deeds if they are
are worthy of it. Don’t stand
back with a chosen few and bite
und snarl and tell what a mean
cuss he is. You may want his
help sometime or you may die and
then wbat an obituary he might
' write.”—Aroca (N Y.) Advance,

MAKING $i0 BILLS.
Every $10 bill that changes
hands here now passes a critical
examination.
Last week the News stated that
a negro had passed upon Captain
P. E. Boyd, down at Leary, in Gal
houn county a $1.00 that had been
chunged to represent a $10.00 bill
by pasting upon it ciphers cut
from Confederate money.
Some of the spurious money has
reached Dawson. A few days ago
a bill similar to the one passed
upon Captain Boyd was passed, no
doubt innocently, upon a promi
nent druggist by parties from an
adjoining county.
It took a close inspection of the
bill to detect that it was spurious,
and other merchants said that it
could have been passed upon them
easily. The work of putting the
ciphers on the genuine bills is
very carefully executed, and they
have every appearance of being
the genuine article authorized by
Uncle Sam.
An organized gang is doubtless
engaged in the nc furious work of
altering these bills, and so care
fully is their work executed that
the)' have got some of the money
into the huhds of unsuspecting
people who innocently and ignor
antly pass it upon others.—Daw
