then they have become attached to
the officers and bat of this circuit
and are not dissatisfied. Now a
new circuit is proposed among
some of the lower counties and to
get it some counties must be taken
from the Oconee Circuit, Mud it
is proposed to drop Dooly back in
to the Oconee to fill it up.
We find that a majority of the
Attorneys at Vienna favor the
change and all citizens whom we
have talked to about the matter
express a willingness to the trans
fer, while some are anxious for it.
None object, that we have seen
Personally, the editor would
prefer to stay where we are, for
many reasons. The Progress
wants what the people want.
We have advocated tho forming
of a new circuit out of the counties
of Houston, Pulaski, Wilcox’
Worth ond Dooly. We think this
much preferable. Dooly has al
ways been on the tail of the Oconee
or South-Western circuits. This
has worked a great hardship upon
our people who have business in
court during vacation. To get a
bill’of injunction or any legal pro
cess, heard they must make », bug
gy trip of 28 miles either Hawkins-
ville or Americas, or go by rail 45
miles to Americas or 100 miles to
Hawkinsville. Th’s is both very
troublesome and expensive.
If we have to submit to^it longer
let us have the lesser evil.

Dooly CountylSchools forI1894
Our Schools have closed and the
bestjyears work all along the line.
The Institutes at Vienna, Al
bany and the popular cheap charts
introduced last winter have made
teaching easier, better and more
interesting to pupils, patrons,
board and teachers. We must
stiirjjiniprove for 1894. Wo can
and will. The Legislature will
probably pay teachers quarterly
andjmore. We^want professional
pride and spirit cultivated. Bet
ter houses—Eaelrschool well sup
plied with cheap globes, maps,
more charts and with them will
come better, quicker and improved
methods. Tha schools of Dooly
have had the experience of poor
teachers and bad attendance. At
tractive] rooms, live teachers] inane
learning pleasurable. In laying
out plans for]1894MeUour board
and teachers remember as Com.
Duffy of Jonesboro says -‘A teacher
that can’t use school helps can’t
use books.” Old methods in ov-
erything*have|”p:issed away. We
now teach a child objectively and
easilygto read and write and spell
by the time he formerly learned
his Alphabet.] £New methods and
better teachers for 1S94.
Dooly CountylTeacher’s tAssociation-
A. B. S.,‘Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 17, ’93.
Every organization in existence,
it seems,Jis not leaving a stone un
turned. . The Christian Worker’s
Convention which assembled with
in this city on the 9th inst., and
closed on the 15th. has shown the
fruits of earnest labor and taught
us a lesson.
There are many bricks yet to be
turned by our Association, and 1
think tlmt if we begin our work
for next year with a purpose (mu
tual improvement—the same for
which we organized) as Mr. Sut
ton, our, chairman and Mrs. Hill,
our Sect’}' insist,Vwc can accom
plish a*good and creditable work.
I believe that our efficient C. S. C.
lion. O. P. Swearingen, will give us
the benefit of such information as
we may ask, and that the good
Christians of the Colored church
in Vienna will giye the occupancy
of it once each month. I also be
lieve that if we’d contribute a few
cents when the collection is taken
up for the artesian well, we’d have
artesian water to drink instead of
that over at the church, howc7cr,
I’d contribute and risk it. We
need a circuiating library and
must have it. Let’s have a’:good
meeting when next our chair calls
and devise all plans necessary.
The Progress has*been*verj’ kind
to us this year, and I feel assured
that we appreciate its kindness.
Let’6 notice the Progress every
week so that we may know when,
where, what, etc.
We must help in training the
boys and girls of our race for) the
voyage of life, that is, to be truth
ful, honest,? and religious. I am
sure that there is no question
about tho^word (religious) used
above, since all understand]^he
conditions upon which we labor
on that line—all questions^how-
ever, will be put into the question
box. Let’s arrange to meet one-
each month besides on Institute
day. Hoping to obtain approval
of every teacher on this line I am,
Yours truly.
