TUESDAY MAY 15
W E present to our readers to-day an excellent likeness of Col. D. A. It
Crum, who, us will be seen from his card iu another column, is a can
didate for the Democratic nomination for Representative in the next General
Assembly. Col. Crum came to our county five years ago and has from the
first taken an anvaneed stand in all matters of public good. Having cast
his lot among our people, lie has steadily worked for the advancement of the
material interests of the county and prominently identified himself with hei
growth and prosperity. He has always taken a prominent stand for Democ
racy ajul its' candidates, and when under defeat, he has not faltered in hip
devotion to the parly and its nominees.
INTERVIEWS.
. From the. Virnnn Progress, May 17, 1892.
THE SITUATION.
Col. I). A. R. Crum Gives the Progress a Talk.
A representative of the Progrcm called on Col. D. A. II. Crum the otlic 1 '
day and engaged with him in conversation during which national and Stat e
politics were discussed freely.
Jn reply to a question as to what he 'thought the action of the May Con
vention should bo, he stated that it seemed to him that neither of the leading
candidates for the Presidential nomination, Cleveland or Hill, were available
and that the State Convention should send an uninstructed delegation to
the Chicago Convention composed of men who would put away their own
personal desires and opinions and act only for the good of the party in th
selection of a standard bearer so acceptable to the whole people that undei
his leadership the Democratic party could return to power ami get into a
position to enact such Federal legislation as would relieve the present deplor
able and distressing condition of the masses, and especially the .agriculturists
of the South.
That they should insist upon planks in the national platform for the
free coinage of silver, an income tax, the speedy reduction of the tariff, and
the placing of certain articles of necessity upon the free list, government
supervision or control of the railroads, express companies and telegraph lines,
the removal of the present tax upon the issue of State banks ; tiie absolute
uprooting of the present national bnnkingsystem, and the passage of those laws
that would prevent discrimination in favor of the money kings of the North ;
illegal trusts and combines that would seek to prevent honest competition and
build monopolies at the expense of the producers and consumers.
What are the measures that you would advocate in State legislation ?
“I believe that article 4, paragraph 4, of the Constitution should be by
appropriate legislation carried into its fullest intention and effect so as to
prevent unlimited railroad consolidation.”
“I think the rate of State taxation should be decreased and the rate ought
to be put back at least to where it was before the last legislature. I believe
this can be done without crippling the State.”
“Another thing is, that we ought to uphold a good system of coinmoa-
schools for the children of the State. Every poor man who is the father of
children ought to be able to feel that the State will see to it that his offspring
have a chance to get a good education to fit them for the ordinary work and
duties of life.
“I believe that the State should not appropriate any such large sum of money
as twenty-five thousand dollars, annually, in giving a few military companic.-
u week each of free rides and general jollification at the State encampments.
I say rather than waste this money in that way give it to the public schools.
I think if such action as I have indicated Jie taken, and other beneficial legis
lation be enacted, that we need have no further fears of the political upheavals
that are now constantly agitating the people.”

accumulation of hundreds of millions of dollars in the hands of one man, and

they have hoarded up to flow into the hands of the public. We should have
government supervision and control of railroads and telegraph lines and ex

The taxes of the State should be reduced to the very lowest rate that would

administered, and all useless and unnecessary expenses and appropriations,
such, as the sum of twenty-five thousand dollars, now annually appropriated
for the State encampment, should be cut off.
The State should nurse and foster the very best system of public schools

I believe that such railroad legislation should be passed, and kept in force,
as will effectually prevent illegal and unlimited railroad combinations and
monopolies among the railroads, telegraph and express companies.
I believe that the Democratic party should use nil of its gixxl offices and
powers to relieve the people from the unjust legislation now oppressing them,
and that ourqieople should stick to the old ship, now that she is nearing the
ports of success.

interviews were had with Col. Crum, before the meeting of the .State Conven
