Story of tho Crime.
On Deo. 0, 1899, Mrs. Hiram Sharpe,
who had left her husband because To!
brutal treatment, sought refuge at tho
borne of her aged mother. The two

armed with a shotgun, walkod up and

pleaded. "I’m going with you.”
“For God's sake don’t kill my poor
child,” walled the old mothor.

thoro was a loud report and tho younger
woman, with a scroam, ran into the
houso and fell dead.
Threats of Lynching.
Sharpo walked loisurely away and
meeting a man ho know he asked for
water, which was furnished him. He
Was askod what he had been doing with

“Oh, I just killed an old hon down
the rood.”
Sharpo went to a relative’s house and
hid in a loft. Thcro tho sheriff’s posse
found him. Ho wus known to be a
desperate man, but bo offered little re
sistance nnd Went quiotly to tho depot,
whore ho was placed on a train for At
lanta to escape mob violence, for there
were throats of lynching the wife mur
derer.
Sharpo was a viotim of the morphine
habit. At tho samo time ho drank.
Whisky and morphine had made him a
demon.
Ho was quickly triod and convicted.
Ho was sentenced to be hauged and his
case was appealed. Tho supromo court
refused to interfere. The pardon board
deolinod to act in tho ease, and the gov
ernor said ho had no authority to take
.any action.
