CITIZENS.
A nice-looking man was around
here last summer who olaimed to be
a landscape architect, but did not
wat t the newspapers to mention the
matter at all. He told how the old
trees in the park coaid be tai/eu out
and new ones put in and the ground
remodeled entirely. Up to this,
time none of his; plans have beer,
exeouted.
Dr. F. E. Williams pulled up his
tent pegs about a weffit ago and jour
neyed off to Ty Ty to practice medi
cine next year. But he had not been
gone many days before he found tho
pressure too strong back here, and
he aoted the little man by coming
straight'and settling down in his old
offica in tho Walton building, ready
to heal the siok and oare for the
lame.
Out in tbe 6th district they are
willing to work four days on Mhe
road to square up matters, but they
arc not working ten days nor pay
ing tho three dollars. They look
serious, and insinuate that it will
not be healthy for the man who
takes the collector's place and tries
to force a settlement on other terms
than the four days they are willing
to give. That is the price the
county is paying other hands^why
not allow the same to tho citizens?
The roads are going to ruin, and
nothing is being done for thorn.
Whether the alternative road law is
good or bad for the county, tbe
country people are against it and
feel that a hardship has been im
posed upon thorn.

The paper is delayedtbis week by
the “low motion of freight traffic. A
bill of paper shipped from Marietta,
(4a., on the 10tb is not here tit the'
e id of seven davs, and it iR by the
kindness of a loan from our neigh
bor, the News, that we can Bend out
tho paper even a day late.
Now that the cotton mills are
shutting down for want of cotton,
and the steel combine is lowering
the wages of 160,000 men, the work
men have a grand and noble oppor
tunity to go on a strike. Strikes
never occur except where the stnk-
ers get three or four times tho price
of a farm hand, and that in the busy
season when the property owners
are making the interest on their in
vestment.s Then they demand, in
one voice, a raise of.wages, say from
$4 a day to §4.60. But when trade
is dull and raw material goes up, or
manufactured products go down to
the extent of consuming the profits,
then the laborers never hold a meet
ing and agree to work during tho
dull season at a reduction of wagos.
There is only one side to their game.
But that is up north and out east,
whorr labor unions march under a
flag and plot agaicst tho cap’n.
Down here when a man, or set of
men, desires to go out on a strike
they do so to their heart’s content,
and their places are promptly filled
by others. If there was an employ
ers’ uuion for every labor union tho
labor question would soon adjust it
self.
