Vienna Progress H. p. SMITH. Entered as second class m.ul matter. SEPTEMBER ID KWH. • Engagement teacups are the re vived fad In China old vyomcn serve as bridesmaids. Let your ohosen friends see that you at least are not. a weather vein; that you can be lulled upon, A woman is apt to speak luTdlto she thinks; a man to think before he speaks. And the woman is quilo as often right. There's many a housekeeper who kcops all the rooms of her home nicely aired, but never thinks of airing her lungs. Sometimes a pair of lungs will absolutely starve for good, fresh breezes. Repose of manner, that quality for which all Englishwomen and some of our southern beauties are famous, is one oi the hardest things in the world to acquire. It means simply the power of relaxing. Women do not go to sleep in ohuroh. This is not because they aro more reverent than men—they arc interested in the nullinory, men say. Do not have too many rules for the children. The wisest and best Woman who ever lived on this earth, summed up the Ton Com mandments into two. FiveVinoland, N. J., girls caught beaux and husbands wliilo mowing the lawn. Were the poor men de luded with the belief that they in tended to keep it up? Keep your wifo good natured by bringing homo Hour and other things she needs for the kitohen before she is really out and is compelled to jog your memory. If your window glass is lacking in brillianoy, dean it with liquid paste of alcohol and whiting. A little of this mixture will remove specks and impart a high lustre to tho glass. The Empress of Japan Ilarnko was tho llrst Empress to ever really rule Japan. It was duo to her that the women discontinued shaving their eyebrows and black- oiling their teeth. Nover let familiarity detract from vour courtesy. Gentlo manners and fine observances take nothing from tho warmth and genuineness of our closest friendship, and they add so much grace and heauty. A certain woman dreamed for two nights that she was about to marry a certaiu man. Believing in tho superstition that if the same dream occurs three nights it will come true, she eat lip all night the third night. A Chicago dub woman recently gave to hor dub this motto: “There is so muoh that is bad in the best of ns and so muoh that is good in the worst of us that it doesn’t behoove any of us to talk about the rest of us.” A lew dfops of oil of lavender in a silver bowl or ornamental dish of some kind, half tided w-‘> -.or- 1 ami a. ■ ■ ng r rv ytni ■ I/O dipnoi : !. , give-, a ddip.'itfn! and 5“ .vigi-jle flow ness to vile atinospljor. of the apar c.-u. man t''’uk.s bis wi”-’ does mb), work worth being paid for, but we notice thut as soon as a widower has to shell out for the services of a bopseker he gets married in a rush. It is not millinery; but mentality, that gives tbe elderly woman the at tractiveness that is mistaken for yomlifulness. It lakes m> long for l'°V ! > understand that aH uio • Wn.n, •' not 1..0 hail'd by yo...... An Indiana schoolmaster recently whipped thirty-one boys in one day. Perhaps he was telling the plain truth when he Baid to the thirty- first one: “This hurts me more than it does you. ” J is report< 1 that the Standard Oil Company has obtained control of the entire output ot the Ontario asbestos mines, from wbicli comes all but a small percentage of llie world's supply. If some young men expended half the time and application trying to get on in the world that they do endeavoring to put the pool ball in tho corner pocket, there would be more successes and fewer failures in this world. Twelve hundred working permits have been issued for children’be tween the .ages' of fourteen and sixteen years by parents in Milwau kee, m almost every instance on ao- eount of the father being addicted to tbe use of intoxicants. Now York city contains a million move people than Philadelphia, yet Philadelphia*has 100,000 more reg istered votors than New York. Philadelphia has »he largest nogro population of any city in tho United States except New Orleans—75,000 in all. Pennsylvania 'has 187,000 negroes. Tho Presbyterian general assem bly at Buffalo, N. Y., has adopted by a two-thirds vote, a resolution which in substance provides that Presbyterian ministers be enjoined from marrying divorced persons who are ineligible in tho churches belonging to tho inter-church con ference. What tho world needs most to day is the man who knows how to giyc words of honest, generous ap preciation when they are both need ed and deserved. No harm was eyer yet dono by words of frank approval of a righteous act. It helps a man tremendously to keep up courago aud spurs him on to his host and noblest effort. But tho sneer at tbe idea of disinterested endeavor; tho good work continual ly-ignored; the unnmnted criticism and nbuso; these have crushed the spirit of many a man, and made him lose faith in himself and the world, One thousand old square pianofi formed a bonfire at Atlantic City the other day and piano manufac turers have thus relieved the market of an instrument that is said to ne hurtful to the tie te: The senti mental side the square piono does not seem to have entered into this matter, and those who keep their square pianos may in time find them valuable as relics. BYRNE STD DENES MAKE RECORDS The System Is Easy To Learn, Easy To Write and Easy to Reid. The time required for the average student to learn to do court report, ing or .write 160 words to the mm- nte has been from one to two years, and this was never decreased until the discovery of the principles used in Byrne shorthand. The av erage student in the Byrne needs only ten or twelve weeks, yet those who are apt learn it in muoh less tune. C. H. Hollinark, of Kempner, Tex., learned to write 164 words of now matter, court reporting, in thirty-ono days; Agnes Wynn, of Wills Point, Tex., 170 words in thirty-four days; Miss Ida Johnson, of Livingston, Tex., 225 words in eight weeks; Mrs. W. (4. Taylor, of Tyler, Tex., 178 words in five weeks and five days; Miss Alma Young, of Houston, Tex., 160 words in twenty days, and Miss Lula Conwill, of Leonard, Tex., finished bookkeeping and shorthand in thirteen weeks, writing 185 words por minute. Examples too numer ous to mention might be added, but space forbids. However, it is jus tice to say that if the system cxeels in one poiut above another, that it is m its legibility and its ability to do heavy work The Atlanta Com mercial Colloge, corner Broad and Alabama streets, has a booklet giv ing full information, which they arc raaling freo upon application.
