Balt. Ev. Post. A melancholy affair took place on the 24th ult. in Robe son county. A run-away Afri can negro of John M'Neily, i*fq. of Lumberton, called at the house of Mr. Wm. Harri son, and in his absence, took from it a gun, which was hang ing read*/ loaded with 20 buck ihor, he nevertheless took down •a (hot-bag, and put in 20 more ftaot, and then went off into an adjoining swamp. When Mr. Harrifbn returned home, on ‘being informed of the circum stance, he collected a couple of his neighbors, who, with fheir guns, went with him in iearch of the ntgro, They soon found him fitting under a tree, and being wit run * iew fee* of nun Mr. UarriioM cußed to the ne- gro to remain where he was, or he would fhooc him. Anthology and B oft on Review.— Under the latter head it is our wiih and intention to give early notices and correct views of all books which may be publtftied in this country, always giving the preference to original Ame rican productions. For this purpose several gentlemen of different profefiions, taste, and ‘ learning, have afibciated and have promised to furnifh us with such communications, under the deparment of the Boston Re view, as they may dunk proper. From the well eftablliked cha racter of theie gentlemen, we hazard nothing in pledging our fclves for the fidelity and talents with which this part of our Jour nal will be executed. In order to aflift them in the prosecution of their plan, we take the liberty to request the favor of you to forward as soon as may be after publication, a copy of all books, pamphlets, &c. which may be lfihed from your prets, and we flatter our selves that such notices and re views will be given of all publi cations, inculcating found Ici ence, good morals and correct taste, as will extend their circu lation and thereby promote your interest. Being one of a number who lately pur chafed ornaments mfcde ot Derbylhire spar, and not knowing precifeiy what kind of earth it was compoled of, I re ferred to iny copy of W illich’s Do;ne file Encyclopaedia for information, where I found fome circumstances dated which it is my duty and yours allb to com municate to the public, in order to guard the innocent from any unpleasant or fatal effects from the ule from this pernicious earth. ‘ Spar, or heavy earth, a name given to a fofTd, naturally combined with the sulphuric, or corbonic acids, and found in dif ferent parts of England, parti cularly in Derbyflure and York counties. This mineral is man ufactured into Vales and other ornaments for chimney pieces. And for realbns given in Ni cholson’s Philosophical Journal, vol.
