Hrbilfip tliOy have just failed to such an Ifiand, and another that he spoke them in such a latitude. Nel ion appears in a quondary and knows not where to meet his adversary. After the En glifn have been boafling of their naval superiority, and that the French could not move from their anchorage, what a morti fying refie&ion mull it be, that the French have not only failed, but the Englilh cannot tell whi ther ! Where have the French gone, is a general enquiry ? Nobody knows. . The English are all in conflernation & Nelson is running to and fro to find them. At what period were the British nation in such a plight? Never—Bonaparte has put them to their trumps, and Nelson is lb far baflkd in the game, that he knows not what ♦ card to play next. He will lofc both by tricks and honors. Bojlon Chronicle. The Salem Gazette of July lays— <{ Hitherto our fifh etmen have deemed thcmfelves Jase from British imprejsments in their humble occupation, and many of them have thought it tmneceffary to provide thern ielves with protections. A Fri gate, taking advantage of this confidence in Britifb generoftfy, ha: gone among our crafts upon the ftfhing ground, and taken out such men as they found dejlitute of pro tections, and the frigate has gone tnto Halifax with the men on board. Information having been forwarded of this trarifa<ftion, a finall vdlel failed from hence vefterday for Hallifax, carry ing the neceflary documents to ellabliih the birth and the ci tizenship of those who are im pressed, with a view of obtain ing their release, in which we hope they will be fucccllTul.” We learn (fays the Newbury port Herald) by Mr. Harrod, lupercargo of the Chip Hannah, from i rielle and Gibraltar, that the United States, lch’r Enter prise, capt. I LIGH+NING. In no season have we had so frequent occaiion to notice the feverc effects of lightning, as the present. In the thunder dorm on Monday the Bth inst. the lightning flruck the house of Mr. Zara Thomas, in Chremonr, and killed two of his fens—one about 18 years of age, the ocher about 7■, and Mr. Thomas himfelf was consi derably injured by the Pnock.— The lightning, which entered the room, had the appearance of a ball of fire. Several per fbns, who were present, escaped injury. But the moft singular t ffech of lightning that have come to our knowledge, was at Hill Ibo rough the day above mentioned. It struck one of the chimnies if the Reverend Jonathan Barnes* House, and demolished the fame to che roof j when it entered the house in various dirrdbons, de stroyed several polls, unhinged the doors, brrke confiderabk glass in the different windows, melted fome pewter, unfodder ed the tin ware, and left the house almost a perfect: wreck. But what is moft remarkable is, that a fiat-iron; which had been just let on the table, was melted, as well as sortie candle flicks at no great distance ; and the nails of several chests in the chambers were entirely drawn out * and all this without the appearance of the erfeds of fire, except that fome linen on the ta ble with the fiat-iron, was a little Injured. No per‘bn was hurt. Ti. H. Pap, Egyptian Wheat.—lk. pound of this grain having been lately sent by Mr. W. Moore, of j Dublin, as a present to Mr. j Jefferfon, the following account ; taken from a late English paper, will Ihew its produce, and the estimation in which it is held m England. Mr, Showier of Lincoln,-three years ago, plant ed 25 grains of this wheat.- The second year’s produce was 10 bushels. This year he reap ed upwards of 40 quarters, part of which, the last week he fold at five guineas per quarter.” We have seen a letter from the Mediterranean which con tains the following agreeable in formation with respect to our operations against the Barbari ans of Tripoli. Consul Eaton, who has assumed the command of the deposed Bafhaw’s troops, had marched from Alexandria with 6000 troops, and proceed ed as far as Derma.—His force continued to augment, —The reigning Lalhaw was preparing i to meet him. —It was confident ly hoped, that this enterprifc in co-operation with the attack to be made by our fquadr.cn, would terminate in the vindica tion of the rights of nature and nations, and restore our unfor runate countrymen to the bieff ings of freedom. — Phil. Paper. j. DefTilines is fluted to have loft nearly the half of his army, in consequence of the wells and i'prings in the vicinity of his camo paving been poisoned. Char left:n Pa t er. 1 We often fee F.nglifh price currents, and have remarked the difference of duties payable be tween British and American ships, upon entering a port in Great Britain. .In I'omc cases, iris double on our (hips to what it is on Britilh bottoms. Com mercial men tell us that this country is charged with a million ; of dollars extraordinary for du , tics on its exports, and another million on the imports. Is this right or equal ? The light mo ney cha ges are enormous, and j the tonnage duty is often above a dollar for ships going with j cargoes to England. Ships in baiiail pay less, but not under 4 lhillings flerling per ton.- While our duties are a poor pi tiful ten per cent, on the duty for, goods imported in foreign ftr.ps i bringing in a nett reve nue of one hundred thousand dollars at the moft. But this is j a federal plan, and therefore it mini be a good thing. A boy who could tell you that two and two makes four, would have known how to calculate better. But Jay's treaty mended the in -1 equality, fay fome folks. No | such thing. It made matters v/orfe, and fads proved it; and | yet ti e fedcrahfts would wish to : fee the difgract ful provisions of that treaty renewed. Better 1 have no treaty, than such as that was. A rumor was lately in circulation, S? eagerly spread by the federal papers, that Mr. Jefferfon had agreed to revive the treaty for a year. We ne ver believed the fiory, and it Is I now proved to be unfounded-, j Peace and honest friendship with ail nations, entangling alli ances with none,” has been said by Mr. Jefferfon, and we hope he will not deviate from a fyftern fraught with so much good to his country.
