PETERSBURG, Thursday, Sept. 12, ißoc. The difpoficion of fume men is such that they fed less difplcafed when denied a credit, than when, after having obtained it they are solicited for payment. To avoid giving offence in this instance, the following in formation it is hoped will not be thought prematurehencefor ward advertisements (from pub lic officers excepted) will not be inferied unless previously paid for. - We learn with very great fa tisfaftion, that the disease which had ex< ited so much alarm in New- 1 Even and in Providence, ha* entirely subsided, and the intercourle between these places, and the neighboring ports con tinues as ufua! —and it is with pleasure we ebferve, that the lea-port towns in the United States generally continue heal thy. Augujl a Papet, The Wilmington Mirror flutes that the (hip New-York, with GENERAL MOUREAU and family on board, all m good healch, patted up the Delaware on Friday last. Norfoln Ledger, The Society of Agriculture and Arts at Paris have been late ly occupied with the improve ment of the plough, and with much ceremony and compliment have decreed the offer of a medal to our Preftdent for his valuable communications on this fubjedt ; the following is a cranfiation from the Moniteur of part of the pro ceedings of the society. tc The Society takes honor to itfeif for decreeing the 2d medal to the illuflrious Jeiferfon, Pres ident of the United States of A merica.—lt is interesting indeed to fee the firft magistrate of a great republic, lending his tal ents and name to the humble in strument of labor ; and it is a circumflanee worthy of remark in the history of this age, and of the new world, that America having received the plough from Europe, returned the present perfe&ed and complete. The Society cannot offer Mr. Jeffer fon a more exprefllve mark of their gratitude than by lending him a colle&ion of the memoirs of this assembly, and an account cf its proceedings. This hom age indeed is the one wor thy of the friend of the plough ; for an elevated mind, a gene rous heart, receives for the lcr vice it renders mankind its true rccompence in the benefit itfeif.” Ext raft cf a letter from Tucmas E. Oliver , late mete of the A~ re eric an brig Minerva, dated I z'jth June, cn beard the Diana ! Frigate, then by the Jjie of Rcjc on a cruize. “ You will be afflicted at my misfortune when 1 tell you my situation on board this vessel, and the diftrefling means which placed me here. Cn the 28th of May I was taken and impri soned on boatd the Kritifti fri gate Diana, commanded by i homas James Meiling, who has on board his veil'd forty o thcr Americans, who have had the misfortune to be placed here by the fame violent means which were made use of to constrain me i besides the interruption from our bufmefs, the painful detention from our families and friends j the want ofalmoft eve ry comfort of life, which we should, under the moll favorable circumflances, in such a situati on, nece Tardy fuffer, The usage we here meet with is peculiarly distressing. Were v/e priloners to the Balhaw cf Tripoli, we could hardly receive more la vage usage. Four or five of my countrymen, have been taken to the gangway, and have fuffered corporal punishment —two dozen lashes have been infiifted at a time—let us do what we may, to excite kind treatment, we are sure to be treated worle than dogs—we are continually kick ed or dabbed—l have myfei? been dabbed three times with a cutlass, twice in my left fide, and once in my left Ihoulder.— Should we arrive in any port, I will endeavor to make my es cape, let the hazard be what it may, for I would rather prefer to die than to exid in such a liqu ation. N. B. Mr. Oliver was pro ceeding to give a lid of the names of the Americans impres sed on board, and was prevented after mentioning Wm. Lawrence cf Salem, and John Barnes. Extract of a letter from a young gentleman redding near the Black River, in the date of New-York, to his corres pondent in Charledon, dated Water-town, June 30, 1805. <c Four men of rcfpe ft ability, who belong to this place , were returning from Kingston lajl week in a boat, acrojs Lake Ontario , who, when about half way home, espied a distant object lying off in the lake , which they Juppojed to be a boat with the bottom up. — They immediately fleered towards it with a design to make a prize of her j when , with the fwiftnefs of an arrow, it darted towards them discovered it to- be a monfler in the form of a Jnake. They were dreadfully frightened, and pulled with all their might for the Jkore, which they Jo on gained , it being at no great diflancc . v The mmfler clojdy pursued them , till gaining fbcal water , it played backward C? forward before them two hours. This afforded them leijure to reco ver from their Jtirprife , to ap proach and survey it. It con tracted itfeif in a spiral form, which they judged to be nearly 18 feet in diameter. From the cen tre cf the curl, the head projected across the fold ?, lying even with tbs fur face cf the water, and , ap parently, its circumference almost as large as a hogfiead; the eye nearly the bigness r/ a tint bdfon ; tie mouth frightfully large, and ajpeft terrible. The length, as it appeared above the water, they judged to be 150 feet. The body appeared to be about the size of a barrel. After playing around as fated above, he Jteered his courje for a vessel, which had left King flon at the fame time with tbcni- Jelves , bound to Niagara, and was cut of fight in a moment. ~ “ 1 i.nderjtand that the Indi an;, have frequently Jeen the fame. A rurnbe - cf beats have been lofl in the lake, which many have ccn jr'ured were destroyed by this monfler. It is supposed to be of the fame kind with that which in fefted the fleas of Norway , as it is not difficult for it, when young, to come tip the river St. Lawrence .” However incredible the above account may appear, the frighted imagination of these fpsftators, have net represented this monfler of aferpetit , to be offuch enormous fixe as the sea Jnake which was j fleet by the m after of a ship in the Norwegian seas in 1756. The lenght of that, it will be recollett ed, was more than a hundred yards. r lhe boat andjhip maflers in those fees fleer, 1 to dread being upset by this sea monfler ; and, on that account, provide themflelvcs with quantities of caflor, as they are known to have a remarkable aversion to the smell of that drug.
