MEDICAL. [From Dr. A. Fothergill’s es say on the Hydrophobia ] “ The contagious bite of a rabid animal may be conjidered unde a three dijlinti periods —the frfl from the time of the accident to the moment the poison becomes attive in the wound. The fee on and, from that period till the dread of water ap pears. ‘lbe third from thefirjl appearance of that J'ymtom to the close of the di/enfe. The treatment o’ the frfl andfe cond conffls of the various means of prevention. ‘lhat of the third, the method of cure after the disease has actually made its appearance. “ though no certain cure of the Hydrophobia has yet been difeover cd, yet, if by timely precaution that dreadful malady can be pr evented, as in general I think it und übt edly may, prevention in the frjt inflance will be acknowledged to be better, though less brilliant than cure . “ Among the various modes of prevention hitherto employed, the grand error lam convinced , has been in treating a local ajfefi'ton as a general disease ; and m trading the cure to certain internal reme dies confdcred as antidotes ; while the poison ha j been fuffered to lie dormant in the wound, and conje quently far beyond their reach. ii May not this be the principal reason, why the disease has during thefc 2, soo years pajl, uniformly triumphed over all the boa.Jfed re medies that hove been invented ? Such as ea loathing, Palmarius's powder , the Lancashire and the Ormfkirk remedies , Dr. Mead's remedy, the ion quin remedy, De fend ‘s and Dr. James's mercurial remedies , the Tarjorc a fenicad remedy, and other infallible anti dotes so called ? “ The Bella dona, Jo highly ex tolled in Germany! -, has lojl its reputation in France. Being ad tniniflered in doses of ffieen and even t wenty grains a forthright before the commencement of the dis ease, caused extreme dryness of the throat, and many formidablefiymp toms, but did not prevent the fatal dread of water. Practitioners who thus attempt to drive out one poison by dint of another, ought to reflect it that overdose of the remedy may prove as defiruAive as the disease and that the latent enemy is not to be driven cut, vi er arm's, by internal remedies, how ever potent. The whole class of boafied antidotes have bad their day i Many have already funk into oblivion, and the refi seem “ has tening fafi to the tomb of all the Capulets !” The unmerited re pute which they have obtained ad mits of a ready solution, as it is much cafler to propagate a hun dred errors than to demenfirate a Jingle truth. “ The late Mr . John Hunter relates a remarkable circumfiance of twenty one perfens being bitten by a dog that proved to be mad: nothing was done for any of them, and only one zvas taken ill of the disease. Had they all taken fame noted antidote, its fame would have been spread abroad of having implctely aired twenty cut of twenty one. “ ILw often does it happen that people are bitten by dogs all of other dficafles, net the leaf ten ding to ihafir.efs ? The annuals are killed on a groundlefsfujpuion, the parties post away to th fa, 01 have ret 010je to jome pretended fpeiifc, equally inefficacious , they remain well, and the remedy ac quires the a edit of having cured a dJumper that never ex Jed, or of preventing one that iOutu never have occurred from that cause. — How tajily are the generality af mankind Jeduced into a belief of what they wifls to be true ? “ lbus, by implicit faith in pretendedJ'pecjfics, (A loafed cures that never ex Jed is modern quack ery Jupported in luxury, at the expence of popular credulity ; while fortune, health, and life are daily facrijiced at the Jhrinc of delujion !” —mi cS^OXa?'”" 1 “ “■ The following bcauiilullv so lemn and imprdfive Hymn, extracted from Carr's North ern bummer, is fa 0 to be re cited over the dea l body of a Ruffian, previous to its in humation. “ OH! what is life ? a blossom! a vapour or dew of the morning ! approach (A contemplate the grave IPhei e now is th'e greeful form ! where is youth ! where the organs of fight ! and where the beauty of complexion ! 14 H bat lamentation and wail ing, and mourning and flruggiing, when the joul is federated from the body ! The iafte dis covered in the head dresses of the ladies, including the equipment oj theirfiraw bonnets and hats with various coloured ribbonds andflowers, is truly plea flng; their looj'eflowing body dref es are a Jo inviting, where too much pains is not taken either to suppress or force natural appearance. The pa>t called the zvaj , and which ufld to be admired, has dis appear ed, and we are left to conjefture where it may be found. An entire metamorphosis has ta ken place in the shapes of cur young gentlemen, owing to the make and wear of their fmail clothes and trowfrs. The prominence that was formerly contained in a vefi or jacket, has found its way into a pair of wide pantaloons, making a correspondent /well or protuber ance in front and rear ; and these are made the more conspicuous by a fijort jacketee that merely covers the breast and (boulders ; in sass the appearance of Joint is so re markable, that if one of their grandmothers could now fee them, she would conclude they were ready to tumble to pieces.
