From the nnmhcr of fruit of

When you send your children

along side of them. Lend them
your example; don’t depend on
one or two faithful men and wo
men to conduct tho school alone,
but lend your personal aid and
presence.
Tho “Madisonian,” one of the
best weekly papers in the state,
with its usual energy and enter
prise, issued a daily edition, dur
ing tho session of tho North
Georgia Conference at Madison.
Mark Candler was hard to down,
even in tho old school days at
Gainesville, ton yours ago.
Hon. .John Sibley, the talented
young Third party leader of Cobh
county says “If the country pros
pers under Cleveland’s adminis
tration as it seems likely to do,
then tho Third party may disap
pear. If the condition of the
country remains had, however,
you will hear from the people.”—
Hartwell Suit.
The price of cotton has advanced
steadily since Cleveland’s election
and is still going tip. This is the
most eloquent argument wo can
make in favor of Democratic suc
cess. It, is one that goes straight
to the heart, of every man who is
not too blinded by his prejudices
to stop and think. The countiy

Education is the bulwark of
popular suffrage. No party is true
to its trusts if it fails to make the
largest possible appropriation for
popular education. Common
school first, until they are within
the reach of every child of the
state. Next, normal training
schools,where teachers may learn
the host methods of instruction.
Then, if there is money to spare,
a generous dower for higher edu
cation. But don't lavish money
on colleges until all tho A-U-C
classes are provided with compe
tent teachers.—N. K. Georgian.
news of the
11 grand Democratic victory, the
| price of cotton jumped up to a
- —i figure, that it had not touched
1892. before for many months. As the
returns from tho elections
throughout the Union have been
confirmed by authorized reports
the price has steadily increased,
until now, cotton has reached a
figure, that lias been stranger to
it for years. This increase from
September pi ices means over one
hundred million dollars more, for
tin; farmers of the south, than the
same cotton would have brought
then. Tho good resulting from
this rise is plainly evident in ev
ery cotton market in the south.
Work is plentiful, and labor com
mands better wages.
Activity in business circles has
been revived to an extent it has
not known for years.
Money is easier, and more
plentiful than it lias been in live
years.
The reason for this sudden
change is plain to every thinking
man. When the people of the
south at the ballot box repudiat
ed the People’s party, in its ef
fort to break tlieir solid Demo
cratic ranks, the confidence be
tween the east and south, was
restored, which formerly existed
and which was lost when tho Al
liance controlled every Southern
state. Eastern hanks and Capi
talists with this renewed confi
dence, have unlocked tlieir coffers
and arc seeking, with a degree of
safety, an investment in the south.
Southern products, accustomed
to languish on tho markets are in
pay
demand, for the money to
for them is in circulation.

Jay Gould, tho rail-road

king, “Wizard of Wall street,’’
lias passed in his last cheek to the
gront Cashier, who closed his
final account, and balanced the
book of his life, last Friday.
"Whether tho balance was placed
on the debit or credit side, is a
mutter of doubt to all, unless, in
deed, it. be Mr. Gould, nnd the
recording ungel.
Jay Gould’s mime is probablv
as well known as that of nnv
American, who has ever lived;
and ns little of his private life is
known, as that of the average
South Carolina Trial .lustice.
He was certainly the most uni
versally hated, most foully slan
dered, and undeservedly malign
ed of any man, whose only crime,
was the accumulation of an im
mense fortune.
In his private life Mr. Gould
was simple and most unassuming,
and his charities amounted to
many thousands yearly, in which
his name was rarely known.
While we do not indorse his
actions generally, wo do say that
he deserves a praise ho never re
ceived, for the good deeds he did,
and for not doing many things i
that easily lay in his wide scope
of power.
President II. C« White, of the
State college at Athens announ
ced in the Constitution of Doc., 8,
that on Wednesday, January 4th,
a short course of instruction will
begin, especially arranged for
young men engaged, or desiring
to engage, in farming. The
course will continue throe months,
and will comprise instruction in
English, mathematics, history,
agricultural chemistry, farm en
gineering and practical agricul
ture, with exorcises m tho field,
barn, dairy etc. Tuition is free
and no fees are charged. Any
youth over fifteen years of ago
can lie. admitted without examin
ation.
Wo are satisfied that this short
practical course will be of great,
benefit to young farmers w ho can
not spare the time for a longer
term. Hoard and lodging can be
had at low rates, and the students
will fipd in President White a
judicious friend, looking after
their inteiests and sparing no
pains to advance them.
It is a step in the right direc
tion, and it will do more to bring
the State college in touch with
the people than anything else
could have done. This new de
parture places a splendid practi
cal education within tlie reach of
every farmer's hoy in Georgia.—

A Serious Affray.
News reaches us of a difficulty
between Hud. Irving and Shirley
Humphries, at White crook law-
ground, on last Saturday, in
which the latter was knocked
down by a stone thrown by Irv
ing. The blow was a severe one,
striking him fair in the forehead
and breaking the skull for two
inches. Humphries had an open
knife in his hand, and was curs
ing and abusing Irving.
Tho wound, at first considered
fatal, is not troubling Humphries
much, and at the present writing
he is able to he up ai d going
about.

Here is nil opportunity for all
charitably inclined people, to
h<*lp comfort tlie declining days
of an aged old lady, whose next
birthday, which comes on the
lath day of next January, Will
complete her hundredth year.
Grandmother Watkins, of
White creek district, is well
known to many of the older citi
zens of the county, as a consistent
member of tlie Baptist church,
and as a kind and loving old la
dy. .She lives alone with her
daughter, and is quite helpless in
her extreme age, and is lacking
many tilings that would go far to
comfort her in her remaining
days.
Master Ilomcr Sears proposes u
plan to the charitably lfidined,
which we trust will result in
bettering tho condition of this
old lady.
lie asks all who feci so dispos

hundredth birthday. Anything
from five cents to a barrel of flour
will he appreciated. Those who
do not live conveniently near,
and wish to have their mime con

charitable cause, may deposit
their gifts with Mr. Geo. Hitch-

Leave your name with the gift.
We trust sho may receive as
many presents, as the number of
years she lias lived.
