Wo wonder if tiny of the editors who Hre revelling in Pleasant Stovalls jteueh nnd honey edito- rial, over drunk it pill of pure mountoiii dew, fresh from the spring. Como to White county if you wish to quaff tho elixir of life. Wc respectfully ask all sub scribers who are duo us subscrip tion for the Progress, to come forward with their doliurund pay us. Tho time of year lias come when we must pay up, or shut up, and wc much prefer tho for mer. A Timely Topic. Shortly after Jay Gould's death Tho New York Sun contained the following brief editorial: •‘First Philosopher—It is an unfortunate country in which n man can accumulate ♦75,000,000.” “Second Philosopher—It would ho a moro unfortunate country in which a man couldn’t accumu late ♦75,000,000.” Which of these two sentiments is right? So far ns human geni us has been nblo to evolve any practicable system of civilized society, (lie second philosopher alone talks like a man of wisdom. This is a superficial view of tho subject. We must product hott est enterprise and the property lawfully accumulated by success ful metiv j^ut it will be said ttyit some men will concentrate in their hands great wealth to the injury of the community, and yet keep within the limits of tho law. In u country like ours wo haye several remedies for the evil. Death in tho majority of instan ces will scatter great fortunes. Tho taxing power judiciously di rected would imiko every money king in the land lighten the bur dens of his follow citizens. Pub lic opinion, properly educated, would make ovory millionaire an outcast from society if ho used his wealth to oppress others. Finally, tho progress of Christi anity must in time make the rich the friends of the poor, while the poor will love the rich. If Christianity and public opin ion fail to settle this problem, then wo must look to death and taxes for relief.—Constitution. OUR GOLD MINGS. ASBESTOS. Asbestos is one of tho most pe culiar, yet generally distributed, mincruls that wc have in this sec tion of country. It has been known for a number of years that White, Rabun, and adjoining counties, have within their bounds, valuable desposits of Ibis wonderful mineral, and many ef forts have been made to place it on tin; market at a profit. Owing to foreign competition and our remote locality, it lias hitherto, been impossible to place it on the markets at a profit. Now, that the daily consumption of this mineral is increasing very rapidly, and the superior quality found in this part of the country is recognized by all eastern man ufacturers, the demand for White and Rabun county Asbestos, bus reached a point that is sending capitalists from the east and north here, every day, to inquire into our resources. Several com panies have been formed, and work has commenced toward the development of the mines. Cnpt. It. It. Asbury, one of our most influential citizens, left Monday, for Atlanta, to consum- ato a trade with eastern capital ists, for valuable Asbestos prop erties in ltabun county. Cnpt. Asbury has been identified for years with the mineral interest of this section of country, and has done more than any one man to ward the development of our wonderful Asbestos mines. FROMOUR EXCHANGES. The Republican party is one of the “lias lien’s.” If it hadn’t Bon, it might htivo some chance. —Journal. ♦600,000 for tho public schools is not a small sum for Georgia to give, but much moro could he wisely and profitably expended. —Journal. The reason there will bo an ex tra session is bccauso there is a necessity for it. The aco of ne cessity beats a-royal fiush of ur- gu men t. ~?CVns tit tyt i mi. , ^ Judging from newspaper re ports the most important feature of soino of our Georgia colleges is laberously educating tho boys' feet. The most expert and dili gent among them will probably never attain to tho kicking pro ficiency of the most unpracticed Georgia mule,—Social Circle Sentry. It has been a demonstrated fact for a number of years that this section of country is exceedingly rich in mineral deposits of a var ied character. Gold lias been mined in paying quantities, in the simplest and rudest manner, ever since long before thestirringdays of “forty-nine," enthused the heart of the pioneers. Millions undreamed of, and untouched, i await the coming of the capital ists, wlio with improved machin ery and methods, will steal from the cunning embrace of nature, her most valuable metal. In the days that are coming, and not far distant, our rock-ribbed moun tains will pour their yellow hoards at the feet of the capital ist, and tin * 1 sands of every mountain stream will pay golden tribute to hits energy and enter prise. The riches of our aurifer ous leads have hardly been tested, and yet wc can recall numerous instances of golden wealth that lias been wrested from the rug- j ged bills’ unwilling grasp.* Our mines are yet in their in-! fancy, and only need the magic 1 touch of intcrprisc, and capita],! to grow into fields rich in golden : harvest. Shako oft' the blues; rise up, fellow-citizen, in Hie power of your glorious manhood and turn a deaf car to the doleful tale ot woe that lias been poured into your hearts mid homes by the pseudo reformers for the lust two years, and catch the quick step of prosperity. Begin early to tickle tho soil. Sow wheat and oats, got a shote or two and fat ten your own meat; feed up the old brindle cow, and don't let ton cents a pound fin cotton this fall deceive you once more into the foolish idea of buying every thing to cat, drink and wear.— Banks County Gazette. Prosperity equalling the fables of Aladdin awaits tho south. Palaces of industry springing up as by magic; fields waving with ilbuudnucc; forests bowing be fore the advancing majesty of intensive tillage; fruits of every land and clime crowning cottage homes with intenser colorings of crimson and gold than over au tumn penciled on the foliage; mines yielding their prehistoric hoards in lavish generosity | tho great wheels of jnyrnid mills singing their songs of joy to the contented toilers of a new era,— these are the pictures that every clear Drain may see painted on the fair canvass of the coming years. —N.
