Georgia farmers, who could largely con
trol this market, have scarcely u orate
of vegetnbloB or a box of hk»;h.
Atlanta pays out. every year at least
five or six hundred thousand dollars for
truck and vegetables, nearly every dol
lar of which should belong to Georgia
fumierH, and yet it is doubtful if they
got one-tenth part of that amount.
Hurnly if those fanners from tho
frozen regions of the west, where land
sells anywhere from ton to fifty times ns
high as in Georgia, can make and ship
butter, for instance, and realize a luuuf-
smile profit, Georgia farmers, with
cheaper land, open winters and compar
atively nominal freight, ought to make
more.
Our manufacturing population isin-
I creasing each year, and as time moves
" ! on tho demand for such articles will iu-
sciid ‘ crease correspondingly. Cannot fieor-
gia farmers prepare to meet this de
mand? There aye hundreds of acres of
land now idle or worse, that could be
made to pay a handsome interest, if in
telligently and carefully managed.
Wherever a first-class article iH pro
duced, it makes a market for itself. A
few years ago the Georgia peach and
the Georgia melon had no place in the
general market, but by sheer force of
excellence, they have made their way,
and are now universally recognized and
sought.
This is not tin* result of a mere per
functory gathering and throwing to
gether of n *fdw craUft”dif pgadlies, or a
few carloads of melons.'lint it repre
sents the success crowning a business,
which has been studied and arranged
for in its minutest detail.
Let not the farmer delude himself
into t he belief that he can produce an
inferior article and command a high
price, and lot him not underrate the
effect of careful handling and prepara
tion for market. Often there is a wide
margin of difference in the price of two
articles, whose intrinsic value is the
same, owing to the fact that one is more
carefully handled and more tempt ingly
arranged than the other. In a business
of this kind, after a solid foundation
has been laid, and the preliminary work
done, the success or ftnlure of the un
dertaking depends largely on whether
the important details of handling and
marketing have been intelligently and
carefully studied, and faithfully exe
cuted.
Let us set our wits to work to over
come tho difficulties and grasp the bene
fits which lie in our roach. In view of
these difficulties and our want of ex
perience, let us study methods of prepa
ration, of planting, of gathering and
preparing for market. Seek intorma
tion from every attainable source, and
h iviug done this, study the markets
themselves, for the successful truckman
knows iiuf, only how to produce first-
class goods, but also how to sell them to
the best advantage.
