. . constituting
themselves guimliuiis of the pres
ent administration, are attacking
the Atlanta Constitution for some
of its hold utterance* in regal'd
to the just diatribution of offices,
at the diapoHiil of the govern
ment.
These same little papers hold
no groivnneo over the matter in
reality, out I hey boot-lick the
Journal indirectly, by abusing
the Constitution, hoping thereby,
that they limy gain the friendship
or uotice of Secretary Smith. Hut
how fur do they miss their mark !
Secretary Smith is too big a man
and too busy with nflairs of our
government to notice these little
buzzings uround the head of bis
morning paper rival. And, if by
chunec he should uotiec them, his
insight is too clear, to bo fooled
by tlie fawning crowd.
Aud tlic Constitution forges
atruight abend, heedless of the
buzzing around its ears, in tha
full assurance of ability to take
care of itself.
Our Geological Interests
Wc called attention to the fact,
the other day, that I lie geologi
cal interests of Georgia are now
more important than ever, and
| should receive the fostering cure
of the state.
The survey which lias unfort
unately been nil short by the
complications resulting in the
practical wiping out of our geo
logical department Inis only cost,
up to date, about twenty thou-
ty thousand dollars, and one in-
vestrnent of outside capital, as a
result of that survey, will amply
repay us for the money the stale
lias expended. We allude to the
recent investment of *.'>0,000 in
Floyd county, where a company
will go to work at once making
alumina, which will afterwards
be converted into aluminum at
the Fittsbnr«r] works. The red-
clay lands of Georgia contain an
inexhaustible supply of this pre
cious metal, and the new cheap
process of producing it will cutis*
it to lie in demand everywhere.
A few years ago, it cost *10 a
pound to produce aluminum.
Now it can bo produced at a cost
of 00 cents a portnd, with a pros
pect of reducing it to IH cents.
Without the information "ob
tained hyjiur geological survey,
this new industry would doubt
less have been lost, to us. This is
only one instance of the benefit
to be derived from the progress
ive policy of unveiling our bid
den resources and exhibiting
them to the world. From a geo
logical point of view, Georgia is
one of the richest regions on the
globe, and all that is needed to
draw capital and enterprise here
is to turn our old red hills inside
out midpoint to tlieii treasures,
ily all means, let us establish an
efficient geological department,
with a competent and responsible
head.—(’oust it ul ion.
