The controversy out of which the present proceedings grew, pre cipitated a conflict between the state and federal authorities, which at one timo look on a serious phase, hut the shed ding of blood was uverted. FREAKS OF WEATHER. A Heated Spell in Chicago and a Snow Storm in New York. Friday was tho warmest day Chi cago has seen in the month of April for twenty years. The mercury stood at 82 degrees and a hot wind blew from the south at the rate of thirty miles an hour. The heated spell lasted until 0 o’clock, when it was broken by a heavy hailstorm, which passed over the southern portion of the city. The hail was accompanied by a high wind, which laid a few trees prostrate and materially aided the hail stones in (-mashing several thousand dol lars’ worth of window glass along Grove avenue and upon many of the cross streets. SNOW IN NEW YORK. Snow began falling ot 8:80 o'clock Friday morning and continued two hours. Advice? from the Catskills state that eight inches of snow has fallen, while at Troy and Syracuse snow has fallen to the depth of three inches. Bos ton also had three inches of snow. If it wasn’t for tlio intermis sions I couldn't get along at all, hut almost cv- irr day 1 have a lucid interval of a few hours and that keops up my hopes. I havo ono now. I have boon taking horse radish and peppermint and turpentine, not through my mouth, but through tho olfae'.ory openings just above, and fxperienoed relief for a timo, lmt it fs a slow hunincsian l wouldn't make a good poiffumo. I have tried antipirino nnd several antis and tho girls bathe my throbbing tomplos with cam phor and I havo tiiod gentian for tho last threo days and now am on half intiom of snlt dissolved in a tumbler of water, which a friend said was tho favorito remedy of Major Campbell Wallueo, who is nr ar ninety years of ago, and thoro was no tolling lmw long n man would live if ho would uso it. A good female friond sent word to string half a dozen nut- mega on a black thread and tio them around the throat. The word oamo to mo and I borod liolor in thorn with an awl and si ringed them nnd went to bad with thorn oil, but I f ain I out tho next morning that tho nutm g business was for tho whooping cough. Another good neighbor sent woid that another woman told h*r that if I would catch a roach and shut it up in a little papar box my hoadaohe would go off when tho roach gnawed out or died. That remind« mo of old Undo Isam, whoso remedy for rheumatism was to mash a lizard’s tail and let tho rebtllo lay under tho doorsill until it died. Ariel that reminds mo now how Neighbor Freeman had two hound dogs that wouldent stav at homoi So Jto curtail-d their tails about throe inches and buried tin frag ments in tho garden gate, and thoy n vor roamed away any more. But tho like of all that don't euro homicranian headache nor per- tiissian whooping cough, nnd to my opinion both will have to bo nursed until tho weather settles down and tho cant wind shifts to the south and west and stays there. They have callod mo to Brunswick to lecture, and 1 am going whore tho salt sna breeze will blow upon mo gomly; nnd I’m going to take tho child and hot- mother and maybe wo will all eoino back rejuvenated and remunerated. But I bolievo in modioino and in doctors. Wo are bound to lmvo them. Everybody can’t go to Brunswick nor to the Hot Springs, but tho poorest p’ople crii boil down bark and roots and shocp safron or something that will amuse the patient until nature cures him. J. believe that thoro is a remedy for al most overv disease except old age, and tho doc tors are finding them out. Whooping cough ought to ho cured in twenty-four hours and it will ho when tho genu theory of microbes and bacteria is fully understood. Ho let tho experi menting go on. Of course thoro will ho vic tims, but thoro will be discovery, too. My wife and I nursed a boy in Florida for threo long months and tho doctors' hills were $500, and tho druggist’s bill had eighty-seven different prescriptions, nnd the boy got well. But though tho doctors couldn't toll what cured him they found out a good many things that didn’t, and tint is making progres* for ilie m xt cano. But after all I believe that go >d nursing and homo com for! s and sympathy snvo more sick people than medicine, and I wish that ev erybody had as much of those as I have and the child. What can doctors or medicine do for the pojr in the slums of tho great cities, whero there are no good (loan bods, nor pure sir, nor happy voices, nor any of tho comfort $ of lift? Jt I didn’t liftvo these and the blessed sunlight to shine through the window I think I would w<lc»m* death as a friend. But having theso and more I am still calm and serene. I’ro got a few more things to take yet, and will th* n be able to tell maybo what didn't euro my headache. Bull feel that the lucid interval is passing away und must stop for the present. Yours In the bonds of hemicrania. Bill Arp, in A lanta Conslitntip i. The Cat in Thibet. The cat is treated by Thibetans with the most marked attention and forbear ance. Even when it spills milk, breaks or destroys arty valuable object, or kills some pet bird, it is never whipped or beaten in. any way, but merely chidden and driven away by tho voice; while were a dog or a child to commit these offences, thoy would be soundly thrashed. Buch vefy mild and considerate treat ment might lead one to suppose that the cat is esteemed holy. But such is nof the ease. It is, indeed, regarded as u useful animal, to the extent that it con tributes to the preservation of sacred pic tures, robes, books, sacrificial food, and the like, by killing the rats and mice which consume and destroy these. But otherwise the cat is considered the most sinful being on earth, on account of its constant desire for taking life, even when gorged with food, and its torture of its victims. Its mild treatment is due to the belief that whosoever causes tho death of a cat, whether accidentally or otherwise, will have the sins of the cat transferred to his shoulders. And so great is the burden of its sins that, even were one sir (two pounds) of butter for each hair on the (fat’s body offered in feeding the temple lamps before Buddha’s image, the crime would not be expiated.—[Indian Antiquary. With the latter the volume of gas is 300 times as great us the grains used. With dynamite the volume of gas is 900 times, or threo times ns much. With gunpowder the gas is set free gradually , with dynamite instnncously. Air presses with enormous weight on every surface. When an explosion lakes place nil the air must be pushed aside to make room for the gas. With dynamite it is less work to split the rook cu which it is laid than to raise the column of air. With gunpowder there is less gas, and the gas being generated gradually, tho lir is moved gradually, and this less work than splitting the rock. If gun powder Is used to split a rock extra pres sure in the shape of tamping is necessary. —[New York Dispatch. HAD HIS EYES OPENED. Green There wns a time when 1 thought 1 knew everything.
