The Duty of our Governor.
We were much surprised
Wednesday evening, when wo
received the following letter from
his excellency Governor Northon :
Exf.ci tivk Dki-autment.
Atlanta, Ga., Ai-imi. 18, 1808.
[l’r.r.KONAL.]—The Cleveland
1’itooitEHH, Cleveland, Ga.—Sirs:
You may desire to know tlmt I
have received a marked copy of
your paper containing a para
graph driving me to my duty by
a Tit It eat. Very truly, etc.,
W. J. Noiitiien, Governor.
The paragraph to which we
suppose the governor alludes, ap
peared last week, and reads as
fellows:
As Governor Northon has pro
posed to publish Dr. Spencers re
port, which embraces only north
west Georgia, we presume that
lie will certainly publish assistant
Whatleys report of this section.
Should no fail to do so, he would
show a spirit, of unfairness that
this section will notsOon forget.
We arc indeed sorry for the ad
mission in Governor Nortliens
letter; for hitherto, we had sup
posed him to be a man fully alive
to a knowledge of his duty ; that
an implied threat, to “not for
get" him, from a struggling coun
try newspaper, should drive him
to his “duty” astounds us. We
have always regarded Governor
Norlhen as a man of too much
integrity, to think of the necessi
ty of driving hint to the perform
ance of any duty.
While we are sorry for the one
admission, wo are glad to note
another, in that, he intimates
that the publication of the whole
of the geological report, is u du
ty, which lie owes to this section.
Justice. Valiantly did wo strike
the blows that placed you, oh
mighty fathers, in your high
places; and with our strength and
might do wc propose to defend
those eternal principles which wc
embodied in our laws and consti
tution. But now, good fathers,
we come to you in distress. '1 his
same Buck, is a thorn in our flesh,
that doth sorely annoy us, and
mnkctli us sick, and dcstroycth
our courage. Remove, we pray
you, with one stroke of your
wonderful power, this runklin
thorn, that we may wax well and
strong in.t!ic continuance of hon
orable service.
The. probabilities are that some
hig mining trades will lie made
soon in this county.

Charlotte Observer: This is
not a poor country; its resources
are almost exhaustless; but the
people—who ate the country and

such a support of the different
departments of the administra

and, above all, they are opposed an,)
to a tax on all the necessaries of

Is It a Diamond?
Mr. Geo. Williams, who lives
in Naeooehee, has in his posses
sion a stone that is puzzling the
mineralogists and miners of tkin
section, to identify. Mr. \\ il-
linnis showed the stone to a par
ly of mineralogists last week,
who were prospecting in Rabun
county, and, two of the number
pronounce it a diamond, of the
first water. Of course some,
doubt yet remains as to it. being
a diamond, ns no diamond expert
has yet seen t he stone. The ex-
teriour is rough, and the stone as
it is, weighs about sixteen ounces
Mr. Williams believes he i:
passed of a rival of Kohinoor, and
proposes to submit the specimen
to Tiffany of New York. The
stone was found on Mr. Williams
property in Naeooehee, on a bell
of llexible sandstone, which runs
through his place.
Should this happily prove to
ho a genuine diamond, Mr. Wil-
linnis could soon write a cheek of
seven figures.

The Geological Report.
As governor Northon insists
on the publication of Dr. .Spen

right, that the entire report of as

North-east Georgia is ns justly
entitled to recognition as north
west Georgia ; and from ail wo

that a report from the pen of
Professor Whatley, is entitled to
equal respect and credit as ail ar

Professor Whatley has been fully
acquitted of the ehrrgcs brought
