The Marshalship.
It. is reported that Boss Hock's
successors will ho named inside
of two weeks. Recently, new
candidates for the tuarshnlship
have hohhed up serenely, none of
whom, however, stand the. ghost
of a show for the position, for the
very good reason that those con
trolling the appointment, have
for months been pledged to a sec
ond choice, in the event that
their lirst failed.
Barry, Rcnfroc and Disirmkc
have each in turn, fairly felt the
prize within their very grasp, only
to realize later, that they have
been following an ignis fatuus.
The light has now narrow s!
down to two applicants, one a
new man in the field, the other, a
dark horse who has been in Hie
race all the lime, hut only recent
ly known in this connection.
Captain James II. Nichols is
the man to whom we refer. In
the history of his life-time, this
is the first time lie has ever asked
for, or sought any office within
the gilt of the people or govern
ment. His record its a citizen,
full of the nobility of Christian
manhood, is unblemished ; his rec
ord as an unswerving and
a staunch democrat is vouched
for by such men as the lamented
Lamar, the Cobbs, .Jacksons,
Prices, and hundreds of others
hardly less prominent, from Sa
vannah to the mountains, who
remember him as one always to
be relied upon during our dark
est political periods.
And now it transpires that
Captain Nichols, since the death-
knell of the hopes of Disuiukc,
Rcnfroc and Barry has been
sounded, stands at the head of
the procession in chance of ap
pointment. Gordon and Cohpiilt
will both urge his cause, while
congressman Tale, with a major
ity of our other representative,
are pledged to his support. W ith
Dlsmukc out of the way, Gordon's
support is pledged, which virtu
ally settles the matter in favor of
Captain Nichols.

for this panacea is very great and
we have had to await our turn.
Furthermore, if perchance we

will come forth in a new dross,

receive. I don’t propone t«> take any

they are learning, uh your Institute does.
I say let them come up to the require
ments of the law nml we will be able to
obtain teachers that will do justice to our
children and credit to themselves in the
school room. Let us now see what takes
to carry on this Institute. Hay five dol
lars per day for the expert, to tell the
teachers how lie would teach, govern and
control a school, then you pay the Coin-
missioner three dollars per day for his
services, making eight dollars per day.
Then the law Hays to hold one week,
which will be forty dollars for each coun
ty in the state—then multiply 137 by
$40.00 and it will give $64HO.OO. Now the
teachers get pay for the week thut they
are attending the Institute which will
amount to thousands of dollars and is
all a clear loss to the children. 1 say
employ teachers who are competent and
well up with their studies, und teachers
that are endeavoring to develop them

should have them religiously qualified,

I say they should oiler themselvs upon
